If you are a Christ-follower in business, you are called to the marketplace and it is no lesser of a calling than that of your pastor.

This week’s episode features our friend, Danielle Bowlin, who has been called into ministry ‘as she is going’ (aka in her workplace).

Our conversation spans everywhere from religion vs. a true relationship with God, prayer in business decisions, managing tough work environments when there’s a values mismatch and even God calling her out of a job in one of the craziest ways I’ve ever heard. (Believe me, listen to this episode just for this story!)

Danielle reminds us that God is faithful in the big things and the little things.

Through it all, what I admire about Danielle is that she does not divorce her faith from her work. She invites God in and shares the process with others along the way, delivering excellence in her business outcomes and Kingdom impact.

Tune in to hear Landon Williams, SIOR, CCIM - Capital Markets Advisor and I talk to Danielle on Episode 15 of the Marketplace Calling Podcast.

Have you been trying to figure out if that restlessness about your work is from God?

Questioning your strategy, leadership approach, or even whether you’re where God wants you to be?

This week’s episode of the podcast is for you.

We talk honestly about what it looks like to seek God in the middle of leadership, career decisions, uncertainty, ambition, and frustration.

Hebrews 4:16 says,
“𝙇𝙚𝙩 𝙪𝙨 𝙩𝙝𝙚𝙣 𝙖𝙥𝙥𝙧𝙤𝙖𝙘𝙝 𝙂𝙤𝙙’𝙨 𝙩𝙝𝙧𝙤𝙣𝙚 𝙤𝙛 𝙜𝙧𝙖𝙘𝙚 𝙬𝙞𝙩𝙝 𝙘𝙤𝙣𝙛𝙞𝙙𝙚𝙣𝙘𝙚, 𝙨𝙤 𝙩𝙝𝙖𝙩 𝙬𝙚 𝙢𝙖𝙮 𝙧𝙚𝙘𝙚𝙞𝙫𝙚 𝙢𝙚𝙧𝙘𝙮 𝙖𝙣𝙙 𝙛𝙞𝙣𝙙 𝙜𝙧𝙖𝙘𝙚 𝙩𝙤 𝙝𝙚𝙡𝙥 𝙪𝙨 𝙞𝙣 𝙤𝙪𝙧 𝙩𝙞𝙢𝙚 𝙤𝙛 𝙣𝙚𝙚𝙙.”

That’s both encouraging and freeing.

It means in the middle of imperfection, insecurity, and weakness… we can still come to God for help.

And it’s not limited to certain kinds of problems. He invites all of it.

But here’s the tension.
This isn’t about asking God to bless our plans.
It’s about aligning with Him and following His plan.

If I’m honest, I still catch myself deciding how I want things to go… and then asking God to get on board.

This week on Marketplace Calling, Landon and I have a candid conversation about what it really looks like to seek the Lord.

If you’ve been wrestling with decisions, pressure, or direction… this one will hit home.

I had already gone to bed and was about to read for a bit.

Then I sensed an impression in my spirit:
𝘎𝘰 𝘵𝘰 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘩𝘰𝘴𝘱𝘪𝘵𝘢𝘭 𝘵𝘰 𝘴𝘦𝘦 𝘓𝘢𝘯𝘥𝘰𝘯 𝘢𝘯𝘥 𝘱𝘳𝘢𝘺.

Landon’s son, Everett, had been born very premature and wasn’t doing well in the NICU.
When I met Landon in the waiting room, he said, “They just told me Everett is going to die. We’ve got a decision to make tomorrow.”

𝘽𝙪𝙩 𝙞𝙣 𝙩𝙝𝙖𝙩 𝙢𝙤𝙢𝙚𝙣𝙩, 𝙩𝙝𝙚 𝙙𝙚𝙘𝙞𝙨𝙞𝙤𝙣 𝙬𝙖𝙨 𝙩𝙤 𝙥𝙧𝙖𝙮.

We went into the NICU and placed our hands on Everett’s incubator, the plastic bubble sustaining his life. We prayed boldly for a miracle. We weren’t the only ones praying. Many were lifting Everett up. I was just one of a few who had the privilege to be there in person, seeing the machines and watching the numbers that reflected his condition–numbers we were asking God to reverse.

The next morning, Landon shared what happened…
Every number had turned around.
Overnight, Everett was taken off three life-sustaining treatments.
Everett didn’t die.

A lot can happen in a day.

Maybe this is part of what Jesus meant in Matthew 6:34:
“Therefore do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about itself. Each day has enough trouble of its own.”

Since then, Everett has gone through more than 20 surgeries and ongoing therapies.
And Landon and his wife, Nicole, have learned what it means to live with a one-day-at-a-time faith.

It would be easy for Landon to say, “I’ve got enough on my plate,” and keep his faith private. But he hasn’t.

The transforming power of Jesus is too real, too compelling to keep to himself.

We talk about it all in this week’s episode of 𝙈𝙖𝙧𝙠𝙚𝙩𝙥𝙡𝙖𝙘𝙚 𝘾𝙖𝙡𝙡𝙞𝙣𝙜. Search for it wherever you listen to podcasts.

By the way, Everett turns 9 in June. Here are a couple of photos of Landon and his son.

It was the first time I stopped asking God for what I wanted and instead asked what He wanted.

At the time, I was trying to make sense of being rejected after a couple of dates. I turned to Scripture, landing in the “love chapter” of 1 Corinthians 13, hoping to find encouragement.
Instead, I got conviction.

As I read through the description of love, it was like a mirror. And what I saw wasn’t great. I was self-serving, boastful, and focused on me. The Spirit of God made it clear I wasn’t living out the kind of love I was reading about.

That moment shifted something.

For maybe the first time, I truly repented of making it all about me. 𝘐 𝘸𝘢𝘴 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘱𝘳𝘰𝘣𝘭𝘦𝘮.

After that, everything about how I saw relationships began to change, personally and professionally. They were no longer a means to feeling significant, important, loved, or admired, but people to serve and truly care for.

I loved the opportunity to sit down with Greg Spillyards in this week’s episode of the 𝙈𝙖𝙧𝙠𝙚𝙩𝙥𝙡𝙖𝙘𝙚 𝘾𝙖𝙡𝙡𝙞𝙣𝙜 podcast. Our conversation is a good reminder that sometimes even when things seem to be going great, God’s stirring could be calling us to make a change…to do something different.

When Greg talks about feeling a restlessness from God, it takes me back to several key moments in my life. Moments when I was doing what looked right on paper, but it wasn’t aligned with what God was stirring in me.. One of those times, God was calling me into the really scary world of full-time vocational ministry. The other time, He was calling me out of that. Funny how God works.

God often leads in unexpected ways, and even when His direction feels stretching or unclear, He always has a plan.

That was the phone call.

For two years, I met regularly with Ian Withrow and his leadership team through our Leadership Team Accelerator - growing in communication, alignment, leadership strategy, and coaching skills.

The 𝘱𝘦𝘰𝘱𝘭𝘦 𝘴𝘪𝘥𝘦 of the business.

But this was different.

It wasn't about good strategy.
It was about 𝗰𝗼𝗻𝘃𝗶𝗰𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻.

A conviction that developing people isn’t optional - it’s part of the calling.

Now, Ian has a group of his up-and-coming leaders - the future of the organization - walking through our Emerging Leader Accelerator.

That’s just an example of how Ian leads at Barnhart Crane & Rigging.
This week, Ian joined Landon and me on the podcast to talk about what living out his marketplace calling looks like:
– Prayer in the workplace
– Ministry on the job
– A company model that fuels global missions

Not instead of business excellence.
As part of it.

And the result is both.

When was the last time you played a good old-fashioned round of “Would You Rather”? If you have children between the ages of 3-15, you’ve likely played it in the car sometime within the past week.

In this episode of 𝗠𝗮𝗿𝗸𝗲𝘁𝗽𝗹𝗮𝗰𝗲 𝗖𝗮𝗹𝗹𝗶𝗻𝗴, Landon asked me that very question. He asked me: 𝙒𝙤𝙪𝙡𝙙 𝙮𝙤𝙪 𝙧𝙖𝙩𝙝𝙚𝙧 𝙝𝙖𝙫𝙚 𝙖 𝙗𝙞𝙡𝙡𝙞𝙤𝙣 𝙙𝙤𝙡𝙡𝙖𝙧𝙨 (𝙤𝙧 𝙬𝙝𝙖𝙩𝙚𝙫𝙚𝙧 𝙩𝙝𝙖𝙩 𝙩𝙝𝙞𝙣𝙜 𝙞𝙨 𝙛𝙤𝙧 𝙮𝙤𝙪 𝙩𝙝𝙖𝙩 𝙨𝙞𝙜𝙣𝙞𝙛𝙞𝙚𝙨 ‘I’𝙫𝙚 𝙖𝙧𝙧𝙞𝙫𝙚𝙙’) 𝙤𝙧 𝙬𝙤𝙪𝙡𝙙 𝙮𝙤𝙪 𝙧𝙖𝙩𝙝𝙚𝙧 𝙝𝙖𝙫𝙚 𝙘𝙤𝙢𝙥𝙡𝙚𝙩𝙚 𝙟𝙤𝙮?

In the book of John, Jesus tells His disciples, “U𝘯𝘵𝘪𝘭 𝘯𝘰𝘸 𝘺𝘰𝘶 𝘩𝘢𝘷𝘦 𝘢𝘴𝘬𝘦𝘥 𝘧𝘰𝘳 𝘯𝘰𝘵𝘩𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘪𝘯 𝘮𝘺 𝘯𝘢𝘮𝘦. 𝘈𝘴𝘬 𝘢𝘯𝘥 𝘺𝘰𝘶 𝘸𝘪𝘭𝘭 𝘳𝘦𝘤𝘦𝘪𝘷𝘦, 𝘴𝘰 𝘵𝘩𝘢𝘵 𝘺𝘰𝘶𝘳 𝘫𝘰𝘺 𝘮𝘢𝘺 𝘣𝘦 𝘤𝘰𝘮𝘱𝘭𝘦𝘵𝘦.”

So often we think, 𝗶𝗳 𝗜 𝗰𝗼𝘂𝗹𝗱 𝗷𝘂𝘀𝘁 𝗵𝗮𝘃𝗲 _________, 𝘁𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝘄𝗼𝘂𝗹𝗱 𝗺𝗮𝗸𝗲 𝗺𝗲 𝗵𝗮𝗽𝗽𝘆. Or, 𝗶𝗳 𝗜 𝗰𝗼𝘂𝗹𝗱 𝗷𝘂𝘀𝘁 𝗱𝗼 _____________, 𝘁𝗵𝗲𝗻 𝗜’𝗱 𝗵𝗮𝘃𝗲 𝘁𝗿𝘂𝗲 𝗷𝗼𝘆. And if those things are aligned with God’s calling on your life and your God-given identity, there will be joy there. He tells us that our joy will be complete if we are seeking His will and doing it in His name.

I use the Principle of the Ladder to illustrate this point. Imagine joy is at the top of a roof and you’ve got to climb a ladder to get to it. Imagine your disappointment if that ladder were too short. Or if you leaned your ladder up to the wrong wall, only to find something other than joy at the top of that roof. Oftentimes, by striving for what we want (wrong wall) or how we want something done (short ladder), we miss or fall short of living in complete joy.

Tune in as Landon and I discuss: 𝗪𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗶𝘀 𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗽𝗹𝗲𝘁𝗲 𝗷𝗼𝘆?

Many people never step fully into their God-given purpose…
because they are fighting the wrong fight…

The fight to protect an 𝘢𝘥𝘰𝘱𝘵𝘦𝘥 𝘪𝘥𝘦𝘯𝘵𝘪𝘵𝘺.

An 𝘢𝘥𝘰𝘱𝘵𝘦𝘥 𝘪𝘥𝘦𝘯𝘵𝘪𝘵𝘺 is the one you pick up along the way.

Sometimes it was given to you growing up.
Sometimes it was shaped through experiences over time.

Either way, it becomes the emotional air you breathe - the thing that makes you feel valuable.

The need to be:
• The winner (or at least not the loser)
• Seen as successful and important (so you feel significant)
• The one who makes everyone happy (so you feel like you belong)

And there are many more.

When your goals and motivations are built on these identities, you're standing on dangerous ground.

Because one of two things usually happens.
𝟭. 𝗬𝗼𝘂 𝗻𝗲𝘃𝗲𝗿 𝗿𝗲𝗮𝗰𝗵 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗴𝗼𝗮𝗹.
And the stress and pressure keep building.
𝟮. 𝗬𝗼𝘂 𝗿𝗲𝗮𝗰𝗵 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗴𝗼𝗮𝗹.
You climb the ladder.
You achieve the success.
You arrive at the place you thought would finally satisfy you.

And then you realize…

𝗧𝗵𝗲𝗿𝗲’𝘀 𝗻𝗼𝘁𝗵𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘁𝗵𝗲𝗿𝗲.

Because success built on the wrong identity can never fill the God-shaped hole inside you.

Sometimes when life feels more exhausting than it should, the answer isn’t to fight harder.

It’s to ask a deeper question:
𝘈𝘮 𝘐 𝘧𝘪𝘨𝘩𝘵𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘵𝘰 𝘩𝘰𝘭𝘥 𝘰𝘯𝘵𝘰 𝘢𝘯 𝘪𝘥𝘦𝘯𝘵𝘪𝘵𝘺 𝘵𝘩𝘢𝘵 𝘎𝘰𝘥 𝘪𝘴 𝘵𝘳𝘺𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘵𝘰 𝘸𝘳𝘦𝘴𝘵𝘭𝘦 𝘰𝘶𝘵 𝘰𝘧 𝘮𝘺 𝘩𝘢𝘯𝘥𝘴?

Because sometimes losing that fight is exactly what sets you free.
Free to 𝘄𝗮𝗹𝗸 𝗶𝗻 𝘆𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗽𝘂𝗿𝗽𝗼𝘀𝗲.
Free to 𝗹𝗶𝘃𝗲 𝗳𝗿𝗼𝗺 𝘄𝗵𝗼 𝗚𝗼𝗱 𝘀𝗮𝘆𝘀 𝘆𝗼𝘂 𝗮𝗿𝗲.
Free to 𝗯𝗲𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗲 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗽𝗲𝗿𝘀𝗼𝗻 𝘆𝗼𝘂 𝘄𝗲𝗿𝗲 𝗰𝗿𝗲𝗮𝘁𝗲𝗱 𝘁𝗼 𝗯𝗲.

Landon and I dive into this topic in this week’s 𝗠𝗮𝗿𝗸𝗲𝘁𝗽𝗹𝗮𝗰𝗲 𝗖𝗮𝗹𝗹𝗶𝗻𝗴 podcast episode:
𝗘𝗽𝗶𝘀𝗼𝗱𝗲 𝟱: 𝗙𝗶𝗴𝗵𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘁𝗼 𝗟𝗼𝘀𝗲: 𝗪𝗵𝗲𝗻 𝗚𝗼𝗱 𝗥𝗲𝗱𝗲𝗳𝗶𝗻𝗲𝘀 𝗬𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗜𝗱𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗶𝘁𝘆.

𝗠𝗮𝗻𝘆 𝗖𝗵𝗿𝗶𝘀𝘁𝗶𝗮𝗻𝘀 𝘀𝗮𝘆 𝘁𝗵𝗲𝘆 𝘄𝗮𝗻𝘁 𝘁𝗼 𝗹𝗶𝘃𝗲 𝗼𝘂𝘁 𝘁𝗵𝗲𝗶𝗿 𝗳𝗮𝗶𝘁𝗵 𝗮𝘁 𝘄𝗼𝗿𝗸...
But many are not sure what that actually looks like.

So we start filling in the blanks ourselves.

Living out our faith becomes things like:
✓ Being a nice person while mostly keeping our faith to ourselves.
✓ Posting our opinions about culture or politics.
✓ Defending Christian values online.
✓ Trying to represent Christianity well at work.

Some of those things can be good.

𝘽𝙪𝙩 𝙠𝙞𝙣𝙙𝙣𝙚𝙨𝙨 𝙬𝙞𝙩𝙝𝙤𝙪𝙩 𝙬𝙞𝙩𝙣𝙚𝙨𝙨, 𝙤𝙥𝙞𝙣𝙞𝙤𝙣𝙨 𝙬𝙞𝙩𝙝𝙤𝙪𝙩 𝙧𝙚𝙡𝙖𝙩𝙞𝙤𝙣𝙨𝙝𝙞𝙥, 𝙖𝙣𝙙 𝙫𝙖𝙡𝙪𝙚𝙨 𝙬𝙞𝙩𝙝𝙤𝙪𝙩 𝙙𝙞𝙨𝙘𝙞𝙥𝙡𝙚 𝙢𝙖𝙠𝙞𝙣𝙜 𝙨𝙩𝙞𝙡𝙡 𝙛𝙖𝙡𝙡 𝙨𝙝𝙤𝙧𝙩 𝙤𝙛 𝙩𝙝𝙚 𝙢𝙞𝙨𝙨𝙞𝙤𝙣 𝙅𝙚𝙨𝙪𝙨 𝙜𝙖𝙫𝙚 𝙪𝙨.

Then we look at the Great Commission in Matthew 28.

Jesus was remarkably clear about our assignment.

Make disciples.

And the phrase often translated “Go” is better understood as “as you are going.”

In other words, right in the middle of everyday life.
At work.
In leadership.
In conversations.
In relationships.

𝘖𝘶𝘳 𝘤𝘢𝘭𝘭𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘪𝘴 𝘯𝘰𝘵 𝘱𝘳𝘪𝘮𝘢𝘳𝘪𝘭𝘺 𝘵𝘰 𝘸𝘪𝘯 𝘢𝘳𝘨𝘶𝘮𝘦𝘯𝘵𝘴 𝘰𝘳 𝘳𝘦𝘱𝘳𝘦𝘴𝘦𝘯𝘵 𝘢 𝘵𝘳𝘪𝘣𝘦; 𝘪𝘵 𝘪𝘴 𝘵𝘰 𝘦𝘮𝘣𝘰𝘥𝘺 𝘊𝘩𝘳𝘪𝘴𝘵 𝘪𝘯 𝘴𝘶𝘤𝘩 𝘢 𝘸𝘢𝘺 𝘵𝘩𝘢𝘵 𝘱𝘦𝘰𝘱𝘭𝘦 𝘢𝘳𝘦 𝘥𝘳𝘢𝘸𝘯 𝘵𝘰 𝘏𝘪𝘮 𝘵𝘩𝘳𝘰𝘶𝘨𝘩 𝘳𝘦𝘢𝘭 𝘳𝘦𝘭𝘢𝘵𝘪𝘰𝘯𝘴𝘩𝘪𝘱𝘴 𝘢𝘯𝘥 𝘦𝘷𝘦𝘳𝘺𝘥𝘢𝘺 𝘪𝘯𝘵𝘦𝘳𝘢𝘤𝘵𝘪𝘰𝘯𝘴 𝘸𝘪𝘵𝘩 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘱𝘦𝘰𝘱𝘭𝘦 𝘎𝘰𝘥 𝘩𝘢𝘴 𝘱𝘭𝘢𝘤𝘦𝘥 𝘪𝘯 𝘰𝘶𝘳 𝘭𝘪𝘷𝘦𝘴.

Social media is not wrong. But messages delivered without relationship often become noise.
Paul describes it this way.

“We are the aroma of Christ.”

That happens through how we lead, how we treat people, how we carry ourselves, and how we engage the people God has placed in our lives.

In this new episode of the 𝗠𝗮𝗿𝗸𝗲𝘁𝗽𝗹𝗮𝗰𝗲 𝗖𝗮𝗹𝗹𝗶𝗻𝗴 podcast, Landon and I talk about the confusion many believers feel about living out their faith and how the Great Commission brings clarity to our everyday mission.

If you are trying to follow Christ in the workplace, this conversation may give you a fresh lens for how your faith and your work come together.
