Ice and power lines don’t mix! Even a small amount of ice can add significant weight. Just a half inch of ice buildup on power lines can add up to 500 pounds of extra weight — enough to cause lines to sag or snap.
Ice accumulation can also weigh down tree branches, causing them to break and fall onto power lines.
Always assume downed power lines are LIVE. Stay away from them and from anything nearby, as electricity can energize the ground up to 35 feet away. If you see a downed power line, call 911 immediately.
