Join FOLC & BLM for a rare organized outing to the Mill Creek area of King Range National Conservation Area on Saturday, May 30th!

The approximately 950-acre Mill Creek Forest, added to public ownership around 1995, is designated by BLM as an Area of Critical Environmental Concern (ACEC) and is part of the King Range Wilderness. The tract protects a remnant of low-elevation, old growth Douglas fir forest, a beautiful tributary to the lower Mattole River, and features a community-designed trail system that showcases a diverse array of native plant species.

The hike will be led by FOLC’s own native plant expert, Cheryl Lisin, and BLM Backcountry Ranger, Kacie Hallahan in addition to Veronica Yates and Otter Anderson, authors of Plants of the Lost Coast! The intimate hike is limited to 15 participants and runs from 10AM to approximately 2PM. Please be aware- this hike will be moderately strenuous to strenuous. We have several more hikes coming up in our Summer Hike series including Return To Gilham Butte, Geology of the King Range, Horse Mountain Creek Trail: Summit to Sea, and our highly anticipated King Peak Moonlight Hike!

From EPIC 🐦‍⬛🌲🌲🌲✨

Dear friend of EPIC,
The North Coast is perhaps the most beautiful in the summertime, with fog wrapping around the tops of the redwoods, hillsides glowing with golden morning light, and the wildflowers displaying their vibrant colors in every corner. And yet, despite this beauty, there is still work to be done to protect it all. EPIC has been operating at full speed nearly every day this year, fighting to protect the forests, rivers, and wildlife that make this place so damn special. Thank you for being a part of that fight.

2026 marks my 12th year at EPIC.
When I first started, EPIC was a small team, focusing primarily on monitoring timber sales and fighting for species protection. As I reflect on where we are now, I am in awe of the work that we do and just how far it spans: from the Klamath river tributaries, where Amber works fiercely to improve water flows for the coho salmon and local communities, to the most isolated old-growth National Forests that Kimberley defends from timber sales, to Sacramento, where Josefina advocates for conserving 30% of our lands and waters by 2030, to Humboldt Bay, where Matt advocates for local renewable energy solutions. And our fight doesn’t stop there. Melodie has been working tirelessly to sponsor legislation, AB 2494, that will change the way our state forests, like Jackson Demonstration State Forest, are managed, removing the logging mandate from all state lands. https://www.wildcalifornia.org/post/bill-to-end-commercial-logging-mandate-in-state-forests-passes-first-committee
Cecilia has been taking all of our work and turning it into accessible and engaging content to help everyday folks take action. As the challenges facing our region have grown, EPIC has grown to meet them.

Looking ahead to the rest of this year, we anticipate the fight to continue. With this administration continuing to gut essential environmental regulations like the National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA), removing public comment periods from most environmental assessments, our work has never been more important.

🦉None of this happens without you.
As a genuinely member-driven organization, charitable donations from people like you make up roughly half of our budget. We don’t answer to distant funders with a predetermined agenda; we answer to our community. This summer, we are asking you to invest in this legacy of environmental advocacy. If you are able, please consider donating here, or explore other ways to give at https://www.wildcalifornia.org/get-involved

Lastly, save the date for our 49th Annual Fall Celebration on November 7th at the Arcata Vets Hall for an evening celebrating our community, the work we do together, and this year’s sempervirens awardee, Steven “Sungnome” Madrone. More details to come!

Thank you so much again for supporting EPIC!
For the Earth,

~Tom Wheeler

EPIC needs your support to continue our work advocating for the science-based protection and restoration of Northwest California's forest ecosystems and the many life forms that call them home.

CAL FIRE Press Release: May 13, 2026 🐦‍⬛

$30 MILLION AVAILABLE FOR REGIONAL WILDFIRE & LANDSCAPE RESILIENCE

Funding will support collaborative land management partnerships advancing regional priority resilience projects across California's diverse landscapes.

The California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection (CAL FIRE) today announced the availability of up to $30 million through a new Regional Wildfire and Landscape Resilience Grant Program funded by the 2024 California Climate Bond (Proposition 4).

CAL FIRE is soliciting applications from regional collaboratives prepared to implement projects identified through transparent, data-informed prioritization processes that incorporate practitioner expertise and community input. The program aims to accelerate landscape-scale, regionally appropriate activities that are consistent with the Climate Bond’s goals to strengthen local capacity, improve landscape health and resilience, and reduce wildfire risk to communities.

By anchoring funding in a local context, these grants encourage regions to move beyond one-size-fits-all solutions and instead tailor strategies to unique challenges and opportunities. Priority will be given to projects that leverage funding from multiple sources to maximize public benefits, build regional capacity to develop and deliver future resilience projects, and reflect broad stakeholder engagement, including meaningful tribal participation.

“These collaboratives are uniquely positioned to identify the wildfire and landscape resilience needs within their regions,” said CAL FIRE Deputy Director for Natural Resource Management Eric Huff. “Regional Grants empower these partnerships to implement projects at scale.”

Eligible activities include landscape resilience treatments in forested and non-forested areas, community hazardous fuels reduction, prescribed and cultural fire, pest management, reforestation and revegetation, biomass utilization, and maintenance of prior resilience efforts. Planning and workforce education and training aligned with project goals are also eligible.

“These CAL FIRE grants will support investments where they matter most,” said Patrick Wright, Director of the Governor’s Wildfire and Forest Resilience Task Force. “They deliver on the Task Force’s commitment to address California’s highest risk areas at a regional scale.”

The program will follow a two-phase application process, with concept proposals due by 3 p.m. PDT on June 30, 2026.
Selected applicants will be invited to submit full proposals.
Review the grant guidelines on the Regional Wildfire & Landscape Resilience Grants webpage.

An informational webinar will be held May 20, 2026, from 10-11:30 PDT. https://www.fire.ca.gov/what-we-do/grants/regional-grants

🔥 Welcome to Waxen Flame's HeartFyre Nexus

We are a strategy and facilitation studio on the wildly beautiful North Coast of California.

Waxen Flame LLC was born from reverent care and a tenacious love for this land, these communities, and the incredible people carrying the most important work of our time.

Restoring forests.
Protecting sacred places.
Building climate resilience.
Weaving the next generation into relationship with the living world.

Our work was catalyzed by witnessing what happens when visionary grassroots organizations, Tribal nations, small nonprofits, and community-led collectives are left without the tools, structure, or funding support they need to move vital change forward.

We empower these leaders to bring their visions to life across the North Coast. Together we develop strong grant proposals, navigate compliance, build meaningful stakeholder partnerships, and implement the organizational systems that create long-term resilience.

Most of all, we help people tell their stories in ways that connect.

We offer free 30 to 45 minute intake consultations and pro bono and sliding scale support for under-resourced organizations, because access to support should not be limited by financial means.

This page is where we'll share resources, celebrate our partners, lift up funding opportunities, and weave deeper connections in our community. We want to shine our light on the changemakers we're honored to walk alongside.

We're glad you're here. 🌊🔥🌲
