Before pallets became standard, moving goods was slow, manual, and inconsistent. Loading and unloading meant handling items individually — one box at a time.

The first versions of pallets were simple wooden “skids” — flat platforms used to keep goods off the ground and make them easier to move. Their modern evolution came in the early 20th century, alongside the development of forklifts.

But it wasn’t until World War II that pallets became essential.
The need to move massive volumes of supplies quickly turned them into a standard. From there, they reshaped how warehouses operate, reducing handling time and making large-scale distribution possible.
