Otis Pierce Cook (1900 - 1980) Oil on canvas board, signed lower right Otis Cook, piece measures 12 x 16 and 17 x 21 inches w/ frame.

Born in New Bedford, Massachusetts, Otis Cook settled in Rockport. He studied at the Swain School of Design in New Bedford and with Emil Gruppe in Gloucester. He was active in the North Shore Art Association, the Guild of Boston Artists, and the Boston Society.

He lived in New Hartford, Connecticut and Rockport, Massachusetts. He studied at the University of California, San Francisco. Paintings are in the collections of the New Britain Museum of Art, Wadsworth Atheneum, Springfield Art Museum, Mattatuck Museum, Central Connecticut State College as well as many private collections.

Edmund Darch Lewis (1835-1910) Watercolor and gouache on paper, signed lower right “E.D. Lewis” as well as titled “Sunday off of Narragansett Bay 1881”, important large piece measures 12 x 24.5 and 26 x 37.5 inches with custom gilt frame.

One of the most prolific and commercially successful American landscape painters of the late nineteenth century, Edmund Darch Lewis rendered crisply realistic images of shorelines, waterways, and rural scenes in the northeast that received popular acclaim during his era. Lewis was born in Philadelphia. Although he became best known for scenes of Philadelphia, Lewis also rendered views of New York, New England, and even Cuba.

John William Bentley was born in Paterson, NJ on Jan. 3, 1880. Bentley was a pupil of George Bridgman, Frank V. DuMond, and Robert Henri. While based in Woodstock, NY, he made trips to California where he painted on the Monterey Peninsula and at Mission Capistrano.

William Lester Stevens (1888-1969) Oil on canvas board, signed lower right “W. Lester Stevens” and depicts a church in summer light with trees, piece measures 12 x 14 inches and 17.5 x 20 inches w/frame.

Born in Rockport, Massachusetts, impressionist painter William Stevens lived and worked in the area for many years. He taught at Princeton and Boston Universities, and by 1964 had won more awards than any other living artist. Stevens, along with his friend Aldro Hibbard, was instrumental in organizing the Rockport Art Association in 1921. He was a member of the Boston School, traditionalists and impressionists, opposed to abstraction in art. The subject matter was usually landscape, views of everyday life, and portraits.

Born in Malnate, Italy, in 1900, Luigi Lucioni became one of America’s well-known landscape painters, whose work has been noted for its heightened realism and photographic attention to detail. Lucioni immigrated to the United States with his family in 1911 and later attended Cooper Union, where he studied with William Starkweather. As he incorporated realism into his own work, Lucioni’s paintings became more meticulous. His crisp, somewhat flat pattern and detail have been likened to the microscopic approach of the fifteenth-century Flemish masters.

Wayne Morrell was born in New Jersey in 1923 and as a young child took an immediate liking towards drawing. He began painting in 1953 with great success and subsequently left his career as a commercial designer to devote his energy full time to the fine arts. Since then he has exhibited his impressionistic works internationally to great acclaim.

Born in Fitchburg, Donald Blagge Barton studied at the Metropolitan School of Art of the Museum of Fine Arts- Boston, Massachusetts. Known for his paintings of Gloucester harbor scenes, and also ran a photography studio in Fitchburg and worked for Bachrach in W. Newton, Mass. He also taught art therapy at the hospitals of Medfield and Gardner. His mother, Mabel Augusta Barton, was also an artist.

Bicknell” depicting Harbor View in Castine, Maine, verso is stamped with Coleman Art Gallery stamp from Philadelphia, PA., piece measures 8 x 11 and 14 x 17.5 inches with fine scrollwork white giltwoodd frame with linen lined inset. Piece went through Bohnams Fine art auction in 1989, black and white auction pictures on 5th slide and since part of an Upstate New York Collection.

Evelyn Montague Bicknell — an oil and watercolor painter known for his landscapes, marines, coastal scenes, and scenes of Bermuda from 1902/3 — was born in New York City on August 31, 1857 and died in 1936. In the February 8, 1902 edition of The New York Times, “What Is Doing In Society,” Bicknell was reported as spending the winter in Bermuda. Bicknell was a member of the New York Watercolor Club; the Salmagundi Club in NYC; and the American Watercolor Society in NYC

Born in Boston, Massachusetts in 1836 and growing up in Cambridge, Winslow Homer became one of the all-time leading figures in American art, known for his marine genre paintings and for his espousing of realism, especially of American life. From the 1880s until his death in 1910, his work was focused on issues of mortality and the forces of nature such as violent storms at sea.
