We all come into this world with certain gifts.

Some of us are wired for numbers. Others can walk into a room and instantly read the energy. Some have the gift of strategy. Others, the gift of connection.

I’ve learned to be proud of my gifts. And I hope you are too.

But here’s what no one tells you when you’re growing up: your gifts aren’t what define your life. Your choices are.

→Your gifts are passive.
→Your choices are active.
→Your gifts are what you were given.
→Your choices are what you become.

It’s easy to mistake natural talent for identity.

To build a career—or a life—on what you’re naturally good at. But I’ve seen far too many talented people stay stuck, not because they lacked ability, but because they made choices rooted in fear, ego, or comfort.

At every major turning point in my life, I’ve had to pause and ask:

→ Am I choosing the path of ease… or the path of growth?
→ Am I choosing pride… or purpose?
→ Am I choosing to protect my gift… or to use it?

The gift may open the door.

But it’s your choices that decide who you are when you walk through it.

So here’s my reflection for today—and maybe yours too:

Be proud of your gifts. Be grateful for them.

But never let them confuse you into thinking they’re the whole story.

Because who you become?

That’s not written in your talent.

That’s written in your choices.

I’ll be speaking at Florida Public Human Resources Association again this year—and I want to ask a hard question:

We talk a lot about what managers and leaders aren’t doing…

❌ They don’t hold people accountable.
❌ They avoid conflict.
❌ They struggle to build trust.
❌ They’re not leading their teams effectively.

But here’s the real question for us in HR:

What are we doing to help them?

Not once a year.
Not when things go off the rails.
But consistently—strategically—intentionally.

What if we had a framework?

Better yet—what if we had clear, actionable behaviors we could coach, model, and reinforce… not just in the leader, but within the team?

In my upcoming session, I’ll share how HR can step up as culture shapers, behavior spotters, and team catalysts. Because team dysfunction isn’t just their problem… it’s our shared responsibility.
