New Yearâs Eve Musings
Some of us make New Yearâs resolutions. Some of us never do. Both groups are actually similar. Neither group actually believes significant change or transformation can happen as the result of making a New Yearâs resolution. And research proves them right; most resolutions are not kept longer that a few days, weeks, perhaps a month or two. Mainly these dismal results come from our inability to appreciate or embrace the amazing power of our own choices.
Even those who make resolutions, make them with trepidation, sort of on a âwish and a prayerâ, hoping against hope that THIS TIME they can make their resolutions stick. The naysayers, because of their previous annual failures to achieve any hoped-for change in their lives, donât even bother to make resolutions anymore.
Letâs take a step back and look at the personal choice that we have at every moment and consider its power. Every day, each of us makes many choices that will impact our lives. Some of our choices are minor and will only impact the next few minutes hours or days, while others may completely transform us. Some choices are easy to make, others difficult. Some will lead to success, some to failure. Some will seem hugely important, while others will seem really insignificant.
What so fundamental for us to know is that each choice, easy or difficult, small or large, taken collectively actually alters the direction of our lives. The choices we have made previously are responsible for the life we have today. Similarly, the quality of the choices we will make in the future will dictate whether we struggle in frustration or live a successful and extraordinary life.
With our choices we alone determine the course of our lives. Choice allows us to select between paths. To go right or left, to move forward or backwards, to be healthy, successful, happy, or discontented, sad or frustrated. We can choose to be loving or selfish, faithful or unfaithful, be a master of our lives or be a victim.
Maybe the only resolution worth making is a resolution we can make every day. We can choose to actively pursue a path that reflects our highest self. If we make wise choices, we have the power to transform our lives.
Sadly, most of us have lost sight of the relationship between our choices, behaviors and their outcomes.
Itâs really pretty simple, if we want our lives to be different, all we have to do is make different choices. Going forward into this new year let's not make choices mindlessly, lazily or out of fear, and find ourselves wondering a year from now, why we didnât get different results.
Happy New Year. Happy new choices.
