Florida Boating Task Force Calls for Tougher Laws

After a series of tragic boating crashes, a statewide task force is urging Florida leaders to tighten safety rules on the water.

The Boater Safety and Bay Education Task Force, formed earlier this year, includes law-enforcement officials, marine-industry experts, and families affected by boating accidents. Members say untrained boaters and lenient penalties have turned Florida’s waterways into one of the nation’s most dangerous.

Florida already leads the U.S. with over one million registered boats—and with hundreds of accidents each year, advocates want stronger deterrents, including mandatory safety courses and stiffer fines for reckless operation.

The discussion comes as lawmakers balance new safety initiatives with recent legislation limiting random law-enforcement checks.
