The #1 Mistake Founders Make When Recruiting Board Members
They invite people to join the board without taking them through a real recruitment process.
Here’s what usually happens:
Someone shows interest (or is just available), so the founder extends an invitation. No application, no interview, no background checks. They skip onboarding, skip the board agreement, skip setting expectations especially around 100% board giving.
Then the person attends a few meetings
And just like that another disengaged board member is born.
This is NOT how you build a committed, high-functioning board.
If you want serious board members who understand their role and stay engaged long-term, they need to go through the ideal recruitment process:
- Apply to join
- Interviewed with purpose
- Background checked
- Officially onboarded
- Signed board agreement
- Introduced to 100% board giving from day one
Skipping this process is why so many boards fall apart or quietly disappear.
That’s why I created an audio series that walks you step-by-step through how to find and recruit quality board members PLUS I give you the templates and tools you need to do it right.
