Fue told me something that blew my mind. Even after earning degrees and spending years as an activist, he didn’t find the language he needed to define his leadership until he came to 2LX: NOLA. He found the words to name what he had been doing all along in New Orleans. :NOLA

Day One of 2LX:NOLA was all about building community, and SANKOFA. It is always the heaviest day on the agenda.

After our rooftop social under the stars the night everyone arrives, the arc follows the shape of a New Orleans tradition. The dirge comes first.

In our city, the second line comes after hard work and/or challenge.

It’s coming, but I opened 2LX:NOLA with a keynote on my own family’s impact on this city. I’m so glad that my cousin Jasmine was in the room while I paid homage to her mother, Kim Groves. The cohort held that moment with a care I will not forget.

The fact that Jasmine and the director of Minnesota’s Office for Missing and Murdered Black Women and Girls were in the room together is a testament to the fact that every year, the mix of people in each cohort is more exact than anything I could have planned, and every year I’m reminded that I am doing the work I was made for.

We broke for lunch and community building in City Park and at Café du Monde, then went out to Whitney Plantation.

I don’t host a comfortable first day. These educational and nonprofit leaders met it without flinching.
