This article confirms what I'm pitching to prospective clients in the affiliate landscape -- affiliate marketing runs in tandem with (and in many cases, is a hybrid of) influencer and PR campaigns; the difference being payout model (and even that's shifting a bit).

"The growth, however, is particularly reflected among direct-to-consumer brands, many of which are trying to diversify their digital ad budgets in the wake of iOS14 privacy changes and the looming third-party cookie death."

With digital advertising getting more expensive, more DTC brands are considering affiliate marketing as a cheaper alternative to social ads.

One of the main trends in the digital commerce space is for traditional media publications to jump into the pay-for-performance space to offset lost advertising revenue. Meredith Publications (think Better Homes & Gardens, People, etc.) was recently acquired by Dotdash (Byrdie, The Spruce, and other digital publications) for nearly $3B, as an inflection point in that direction.

In a world when the tech giants own so much of the digital marketplace, providing non-Amazon/Facebook options for commerce is in the interest of small and medium-sized businesses, but also in the interest of consumers who can more easily support and trust those brands.
