Here's an interesting security related idea from a short news article addressing NYC's recent rising subway crime rates. The article quotes a news commentator calling people's being cautioned to not wear headphones and be fully absorbed in their phones in NYC's subway system as a "quality of life issue." This highlights the simple fact that most people consider situational awareness out in public a burden.

Certainly, all of us can think back to a time in our early lives when we loved going out and about simply for the opportunity it gave us to look around and explore the world around us. Why now, has situational awareness, a thing so rooted in our natural curiosity and wonder, become a burdensome task? One that we consider so onerous that we are willing to pay extravagant prices for people to do for us - because largely that is what the private security industry has become.

This troublesome question is not meant to be answered, but rather to point us back to a more natural and ethical style of security. One where an ever-growing number of AI driven surveillance systems is replaced by a returned, natural, collective sense of awareness that enables each of us to better look out for ourselves and each other. This is a foundational idea in what Affirmative Solutions calls "Ethical Security."

It's always been interesting how much the security industry in general ignores simple data like this in the formulation of their client's security assessments and mitigation planning. Here we have strong data that those who are actively disengaged (underutilized) in their employment, actually experience more stress, physical pain, sadness, and anger than even the unemployed. Gavin de Becker, security specialist and best-selling author, once brilliantly stated that human suffering is the greatest predictor of violence available to security practitioners.

So why do so many security service providers not factor this idea more prominently when conducting their client's risk assessment and planning? Instead, we unethically sell them on more expensive manpower and tech heavy solutions, when in fact we should be selling them on simple strategies focused on promoting cultures of respect in and outside their organizations. FBI's Report: Active Shooter Incidents in the United States in 2021. Report claims a distinct upward trend has occurred over the past two years: 2019-2020: 33%, total of 40, 2020-2021: 52.5%, total of 61.

Interesting Facts: Month of June saw the most incidents; Saturdays saw the most incidents out of the week; 1200-1800 is the time frame when most incident occurred; California, Georgia, and Texas lead the way in number of incidents; Tennessee and Iowa saw the most casualty producing incidents; Despite the uptick in incidents the years total casualty rate is still below the average seen in recorded period 2017-2021; LE vs. Security Engagement ratio in these incidents was about 17/1, while LE vs. Security casualties from these engagements reflect 2/1 ratio.

So much good and readily accessible data!

The best way to stay safe is to daily update your internal threat model by becoming more aware of what is going on around you. Here is some interesting information concerning school shootings that will help you take a more data driven look at the phenomena. The report, which is put out by the U.S. Government Accountability Office, can be found in either its 52 pg. entirety or condense summary version in the link below. It's a great read and really gives you a lot of information to sink your teeth into and craft the kind of mental awareness model that will actually help keep you and those you love safe.

Sadly, a trend that is on the rise not just in Montana, but across the USA. Best thing you can do is to simply talk to your children about what to do when approached by strangers, and to help lay out some clear boundaries and strategies to guide them in navigating this danger. I recently heard about a parent advising their child to run to either food, families, or flags when approached by strangers.

1. Food - Run to a nearby restaurant and ask staff and management for help.
2. Families - Those with children are more likely to help another child in need.
3. Flags - Run to those whose uniforms have flags on them.

Is this list perfect? No, but it's a good place to start a conversation with your children. It's also important to note how sad it is to see our state's Native children are still disproportionately represented in these types of cases. Our thoughts and prayers are with the missing in hopes they will be found and returned to their families.

With so many communities seeing record numbers of police officers departing the force, more and more communities are turning to different strategies such as contracting private security firms services to fill in the gaps.

Entirely apart from the issue of manpower shortages, this strategy makes sense at a purely fiscal level when we note that the average per man-hour cost for police services hangs right around $65/hr. nationally, while many private security companies can offer their services at around half that cost. But with even the short term results of this strategy still remaining yet to be seen, how would you feel about your local city or county government seeking the services of a private security company to supplement their local policing services? I love art, especially when it teaches us about ourselves. There is a huge safety lesson to learn here about the value of staying curious and maintaining a sense of wonder in how we observe the world around you. That is because every environment and situation can be though of as a good story, full of lots of layers, plot twist, and complexity. Just like any good story, you have to be willing to stay engage and curious long enough to turn yet another page to learn more about it. So next time you're sitting on that park bench or just going wherever life takes you - quiet yourself, keep zooming in, looking a little closer, or turning the next page until you find yourself mastering the story of your environment. What's even better than that is, once you understand your environment, you discover how your character fits into that environment and how best to proceed. Curiosity is your greatest superpower in staying safe.
