Newborns feed every 2-3 hours, around the clock. That’s about 8-12 feedings a day.
Why?
✨Blood sugar stabilization - babies are born with limited energy reserves. Feeding often helps regulate their blood sugar
✨Tiny Tummies- at birth, a babies stomach is about the size of a marble. Reaching to about the size of an egg, or 2-3 ounces, by day 10. Since they’re not ingesting large amounts, they need to feed frequently to get enough nutrition
✨Brain Development- babies brains are developing extremely quickly. Feeding often provides essential fatty acids and nutrients to support healthy brain development
✨Milk Supply (for breastfeeding parents) - it’s all about supply and demand. When your baby feeds every 2-3 hours, this tells your body to produce milk. This helps establish and maintain milk supply in the early weeks
Here is what we don’t talk about enough- it’s hard. That newborn stage can be a blur of feedings, diaper changes, burping, and sleeping when you can. This can be a stressful time, but that doesn’t mean you’re doing anything wrong. Frequent feedings are normal, expected, and healthy.
