The difference between detection and prevention in home security lies in their approaches to handling potential threats.
Detection is reactive—it tells you something is wrong, allowing you to take action after the fact. For example, a security camera might record footage of an intruder, or an alarm might sound when a window is opened.
Prevention is proactive—it strengthens your home’s defenses to deter criminals. Examples include installing steel security screen doors and windows and using reinforced locks.
While detection is very useful and helps you respond to security breaches, prevention is key to reducing the likelihood of those breaches happening in the first place.
