Cold nights are here in Gunnison and Crested Butte, and that means
frozen pipes. When water freezes inside a pipe it expands, and the
break often doesn't show until it thaws, usually behind a wall, under
a floor or down in the crawlspace.
A few steps can help prevent a burst pipe before the deep cold sets in:
- Keep the heat at 55°F or higher, even when the house or cabin is empty.
- Open the cabinet doors under sinks on outside walls so warm air can
reach the pipes.
- Seal crawlspace vents and drafts, and insulate exposed pipes.
- Know where your main water shutoff is before you need it.
If a pipe does burst, shut off the main water, turn off power to any
wet areas if it's safe to, and call us right away. Water spreads fast
into subfloors and insulation, and mold can start growing within 24 to
48 hours.
Valley Restoration & Construction provides 24/7 emergency water damage
response across Gunnison, Crested Butte and the Western Slope. Our
crews are trained to IICRC standards, and they'll extract the water,
dry the structure and repair the damage.
Call (970) 964-4437 any time, day or night.
