Distinguishing between the “high performers” and “high potentials” is a key component in identifying executive leadership potential.

Competency modeling allows us to conduct a deeper analysis of the growth needed in our employees. Our findings from this kind of assessment will help guide our development plans for the talent on our teams and help them achieve the desired competency level.

It is often believed that we are entitled to anger so long as it is righteous in nature. God designed us to feel emotions, so anger in itself is not sinful. This is all true, but God’s Word clarifies that He does not condone us lashing out in anger.

Our culture of anger is built upon a variety of historical and current social, economic, personal, political, and spiritual factors, all of which are causing much strife and division. But there is more that unites us than divides us, and the most unifying truth is that we are loved and given the opportunity to be forgiven, saved by grace, and welcomed into an eternal relationship with our Creator. Those who receive this gift are called to set aside anger and instead show love.

As Christian business leaders, we have an opportunity to develop the next generation of leaders and executives, focusing on developing the whole person, not just job-specific skills.

As our businesses grow, concentrating leadership accountability in a single person or small group becomes unsustainable. Leaders must prioritize executive talent development to ensure up-and-coming leaders can effectively manage the business of today and prepare for the challenges of tomorrow.

Christianity is a revealed worldview. We believe that there is a God and that He has spoken to us in His Word. The more time we spend in God’s Word, the more we begin to think like Him. With time and study, we will develop a biblical worldview.

To increase employee engagement with training, it is helpful to consider the perspectives of our employees. What are their goals and how can we create training that accomplishes both our goals and theirs? C12 member surveys over the years show higher job satisfaction11 for both leaders and employees when the company provides clarity on expectations, desired outcomes, and plans for achievement.

If a business problem is related to skills that are teachable and that fall into one of the following two categories, we can address it with training.

Some soft skills enable us to better utilize hard skills (e.g., critical thinking, communication, and collaboration), and some training can straddle both categories (e.g., teamwork and problem-solving).

A Case Study on Good Intentions: Abundant Insurance Solutions - 5, Final

Ten days after the party, Rolonda informs Derek that two employees had come to her with serious concerns. Raphael said the gift card giveaway discriminated against him as a single man. Shannon felt coerced into what she termed a “mandatory, company-sponsored Christian worship service.” She is considering filing a complaint with the EEOC.

It pains Derek to think his actions caused negative reactions or created risk for the business. He doesn’t know how to approach Raphael and Shannon or how to respond to an EEOC complaint.
Derek prays for wisdom, right then and there, in front of Rolonda.

Leading a business is a powerful platform for redemptively engaging culture, promoting human flourishing, and testifying to the reality of Jesus Christ. Our businesses serve as a fantastic gymnasium to work out our faith with both zeal and humility. But right intentions do not excuse poor ex*****on. Neither does fear or ignorance justify denying our faith. May we accept God’s invitation to the narrow path of humbly respecting the law and courageously expressing our faith in our businesses.

A Case Study on Good Intentions: Abundant Insurance Solutions - 4

At the company’s annual Christmas banquet, Derek planned to celebrate team wins and overall company achievements. He would also celebrate five years as a follower of Jesus, with a chance to help people experience Christmas better than ever before.

Derek was excited to announce profit-sharing bonuses of $3,000+ per employee. For team members with children, he gave additional gift cards to a local amusement park. Even those with concerns about his faith would sense his genuine love for them, he thought.

Derek led the company in a prayer of thanksgiving and asked everyone to sing “Silent Night.” It was powerful. People were in tears and hugging each other. Derek felt humbled that God had blessed this special night.

The business was thriving, as was Derek’s sense that he was finally “honoring God” in his business. When his pastor encouraged him to “live boldly for Christ,” Derek could point to specific initiatives in which he was living his faith at AIS. He was in awe—witnessing a number of employees coming to faith in Jesus Christ and people celebrating life improvement.

But last fall, Rolonda pulled Derek aside, concerned that he might be needlessly exposing the company to risk. She had never been part of a company like this. Some employees were starting to ask questions. Derek seemed to dismiss her concerns, saying, “We’re just being faithful. Don’t worry. God will take care of us!”

A Case Study on Good Intentions: Abundant Insurance Solutions - 2

Over the next year, the company grew quickly, thanks to new area managers Raphael, Shannon, and Carly. Although not Christians, they had been able to affirm the company’s guiding principles. During her onboarding process, Shannon identified as a le***an and atheist, and she asked for a meeting with Derek to clarify cultural expectations. She felt accepted by Derek and was able to affirm the mission statement. Shannon and the other new managers all believed Derek’s Christian commitment was positive for the company culture.

Working alongside Derek, Rolonda embarked on a project to refresh the employee onboarding process in order to help employees understand the unique AIS culture.
