Just for laughs.

Occupational hazard: People assume I must hate marriage because I'm a divorce mediator. 😅

The truth is - I don't hate marriage. (I mean, I also won't do it again, but that's another convo)

I think relationships are just hard.

Divorce Mediation (rather than battling through attorneys) has actually shown me that couples can move on and still be friends, great co-parents, or at least civil to each other.

Divorce doesn't have to be a war. Mediation is the better way.

Thinking about divorce can feel overwhelming.

Before you make big decisions, take a step back and get informed.

That's exactly why we created the Pre-Divorce Guide—to help you understand the process, prepare financially, avoid common mistakes, and move forward with confidence.

A little preparation now can save you time, money, and stress later.

The best parenting plans aren't built for the days you agree.

They're built for the days you don't.

Here are the 5 things I believe every parenting plan should include after helping hundreds of families through divorce.

Tell me you're getting a divorce without telling me you're getting a divorce... 👀

You know the couple that hasn't posted a single picture together in three years...

Then suddenly it's:
❤️ "My soulmate."
❤️ "Couldn't do life without you."
❤️ "My forever."

And I quietly think...

"Well... I might be seeing you in mediation soon." 😂

To be fair, I could be wrong...

But after years of helping couples through divorce, I've noticed that an unexpected flood of lovey-dovey social media posts sometimes shows up right before things fall apart.

Maybe it's trying to convince everyone else.
Maybe it's trying to convince themselves.
Maybe it's just a coincidence.

Either way... I haven't been proven wrong yet. 😅

(Just a lighthearted observation from someone who spends a lot of time in the divorce world.)

Do I Have to See My Spouse During Mediation?

One of the biggest misconceptions about mediation is that you'll be sitting across the table from your spouse the entire time.

At SALT Mediation, that's not how we do things.

We always begin with spouses in separate rooms (or separate virtual meeting rooms). This creates a calmer environment where each person can speak openly and focus on finding solutions—not reacting to the other person.

Only if BOTH spouses request to meet together AND the mediator believes it would be productive do we bring everyone into the same room.

If either person prefers to remain separate, or if we think staying apart will lead to a better outcome, we continue the entire mediation that way.

Our goal isn't to force uncomfortable conversations. Our goal is to help you reach an agreement in the way that's most likely to be successful.

Should your parenting plan include travel rules? Absolutely.

One of the most overlooked sections in a parenting plan is travel—and it's one that can prevent a lot of future conflict.

Here's what we generally recommend:

✅ Domestic travel: No approval needed. Parents should be free to take the children on vacations, family visits, or weekend trips during their own parent-time.

🌎 International travel: This typically requires the other parent's written consent. International travel comes with passports, border crossings, and added legal considerations, so it's worth having an agreement in place.

📍 Keep each other informed: Whether you're traveling within the U.S. or abroad, provide basic travel details like where you'll be staying and how to reach you in case of an emergency.

A good parenting plan isn't about controlling each other—it's about creating clear expectations so everyone knows what to expect.

So, I don't recommend...

✂️ Cutting the armpits out of every one your spouse's T-shirts.
🧦 Cutting the toes off every pair of their socks.

I get it. Divorce can bring out frustration, anger, and the occasional desire for revenge. But here's the thing:

The satisfaction lasts about five minutes.
The conflict? That can last for months.

If your goal is to get through your divorce with less stress, lower costs, and a better outcome, save the scissors.

Come to mediation instead. We'll help you focus on the decisions that actually matter—not replacing an entire sock drawer.
