Data has shown that over 50% of fatal encounters with police involve an individual with a mental illness. With rates such as this, it's evident that police are not equipped to deal with these encounters and that something different needs to be done.

A new police reform proposal is focusing on using existing COPS grants to address these inequities and activists across the board, from community leaders to leaders in law enforcement, are pushing to ensure that a change is made.
