We're taught that it's rude and taboo to discuss this, but it's not.
The more we talk about this, the closer we get to fair pay for all of us.
I was sitting at a bar ~4 years ago with a girlfriend and casually disclosed my salary. We were chatting career stuff and she (of similar age, less time at university, same years of experience) mentioned she makes about 2.5-3x what I mentioned.
I thought to myself: "Wait, what?" I loved my water resources job at the time, but also found it fascinating that this other sector could earn that much more. I never felt jealous nor did I go jumping to her sector -- but knowledge of earning potential is POWERFUL, especially if you grew up broke and aren't aware of all that's possible for you out there.
Maybe that's a small part of what had me leaving my ~75k / year science job for entrepreneurship? (which has no income limits, it's all up to me 🙃).
Can you relate? When have you had a moment of "My golly, I didn't know that you could make $___ by doing ___!" or "Okay wow, I should probably ask for a raise or job hunt. . . ?"
