Investing In Your Team

When we think about growing a company, we often focus on investing in product development, operations, and marketing/sales.

Less often do we think about investing in our team when talking about company growth.

At the end of the day, our teams are the driving forces behind our business. Without them, there is no business.

The more you can invest in your team, the more you’ll grow.

Options to consider…

1 – Offer professional development opportunities both inside and outside the office. Create a budget where team members can apply to take courses, go to conferences, professional events, and more.

2 – Implement wellness programs. This could include anything from mental health support and fitness initiatives to work-life balance strategies. Healthier people tend to be more productive and engaged employees.

3 – Provide competitive compensation and benefits. If someone seems to be struggling, talk to them; sometimes they are struggling financially. Regularly review and adjust salaries to ensure your employees feel valued.

Growth doesn’t always start with your product. It often starts with your team.

What are you doing to invest in your team?

Setting yourself up for success

When you first start a business, there is a lot of hustle and grinding.

And that’s okay.

However, as CEO Tess Partridge reminded me, at some point, you do have to take your foot off the gas and give yourself some space to breathe – even when you’re in go-go-go mode.

This may not look like spa days or weeklong vacations.

It can be as simple as waking up at 4:30 in the morning and working out for an hour.

With a lot of responsibilities and roles outside of just being a business owner, Tess recognizes the fact that you have to intentionally create space to take care of yourself.

As the old adage goes, you cannot pour from an empty cup.

Now, is getting up at 4:30 in the morning difficult?

Absolutely.

And, sometimes you have to do what you have to do in order to set yourself up for both short-term and long-term success… even when it’s uncomfortable.

How do you prioritize yourself?

3 Types of Questions

If you want to become a better leader, ask better questions.

Most leaders want to become the best leader possible. One way to make an impact is to improve your ability to ask meaningful questions and transform those answers into meaningful outputs that move the needle forward in your company.

This begs the question: what questions make the biggest impact?

❓ Investigative questions – Dig deeper into the problem or opportunity at hand to find the nonobvious information. These questions usually start with “what” or “how”.

❓ Productive questions – Asses your resources to identify talent, time, key metrics, milestones, etc. These are usually “how” related questions.

❓ Subjective questions – Find the emotion behind the issue or opportunity. This could look like personal reservations, frustrations, and hidden agendas.

As leaders, the more types of questions we ask, the more information we’ll discover, which will allow us to lead and coach our team members more effectively.

What questions have worked well for you and your team?

Mini-Billboard

When you think of marketing your business, there are likely a few things that come to mind.

Website. SEO. Social media. Paid online ads. Direct mail.

Most of the time, billboards are out of the question unless you have an incredibly large marketing budget where you don’t necessarily need to track dollar-for-dollar return-on-investment.

After all, apart from overall brand awareness, it’s hard to track the ROI from buying billboard space.

Cue Nashville CEO Tess Partridge.

She wanted a way to start targeting moms for one of her businesses.

Rather than get on the hamster wheel of 24/7 social media content creation or paying for Facebook ads, she chose a different route.

Tess leveraged her local network to place yard signage on private property.

It allowed to her to hyper-target her audience without costing a small fortune.

And Tess kept that money in her community by paying homeowners.

Absolutely brilliant.

Now, she’s building an entire business (At Home Ads) around this concept.

Here are a few takeaways from our Podcast interview…

1 – Find a marketing strategy that few people are using in your industry, adapt it to yours, and it’ll create a ton of additional leverage for you.

2 – When considering launching a new product, service, or company, start by finding a pain point that hasn’t been solved and create a solution for that pain point. This means you’ll have little to no market competition, allowing you to dominate.

3 – Don’t be afraid to be wildly different. Just because no one has done it before doesn’t mean you shouldn’t try it. The results may just surprise you!

Special shout-out to Tess for taking the time to share her wisdom on my new podcast, From The Top Floor. Check it out on YouTube: The Top Floor Podcast

🌱 Ever found yourself stuck in the clutches of a fixed mindset, where it feels like every setback is someone else's fault? It happens to the best of us! But let's take a leaf out of Dr. Carol Dweck's book on mindset and shift our perspective. 💡

Say goodbye to the blame game! Instead of pointing fingers when things don't go as planned, let's cultivate a growth mindset that focuses on learning and progress. 📈 Whether it's a project gone awry or a disagreement with your partner, resist the urge to assign blame.

💡 Here's a tip: Try "blaming" a fake persona! Instead of internalizing mistakes or pointing fingers at loved ones, imagine a fictional character making the same errors. By externalizing the blame, you can better analyze the situation objectively and focus on constructive solutions.

Whether in personal growth or business development, taking time to look inward is key to unlocking progress. It's not just about assessing past actions, but understanding the why behind them and how to approach things differently next time. Are you operating from abundance or scarcity? Embracing a growth mindset? Reflecting on these questions can shape your path forward.

Follow-through and accountability are crucial too. Reflecting on why we haven't followed through allows us to identify obstacles and devise strategies to overcome them. Fear of failure? Self-doubt? By acknowledging these barriers, we pave the way for growth and resilience.

Reflection isn't just about looking back—it's about empowering you to take purposeful action towards a brighter future.
