Our licensure autonomy is under threat. ⚖️

The Tennessee General Assembly is considering SB 2227 (today)/HB 2539 (tomorrow), which in Section 7(d) would dissolve the Tennessee Board for Licensed Professional Counselors, Licensed Marital and Family Therapists, and Licensed Clinical Pastoral Therapists and move oversight of these professions to a commission-run regulatory structure rather than maintaining a counseling-specific licensure board.

Please tune in to WXNA 101.5 FM on Friday, 12/19/25 (or livestream on wxnafm.org) for Psychobabble. This week, host John Davis interviews special guest Katya Brewington LPC-MHSP on mental health issues in our area during the holiday season.

Katya Brewington, M.Ed., LPC/MHSP/S, NCC, ACS is the owner and CEO of Brewington, LLC and Cedar Tree Wellness Center. She has provided counseling services to individuals, couples/families, and groups since 2003. She works with children 6 years of age and older, adolescents, and adults. Her approach is eclectic, primarily based on person-centered, family systems, cognitive-behavioral, and trauma-informed cognitive-behavioral models. Katya specializes in trauma, PTSD, mood disorders, anxiety, behavioral, marital, and parenting issues. She has completed Level 1 Training in Gottman Method Couples Therapy and uses Gottman Method Couples Therapy and assessments in her work. Additionally, Katya has provided licensure supervision to new practitioners since 2011. Katya holds a Master’s degree in counseling from Vanderbilt University and is a Licensed Professional Counselor/Mental Health Service Provider/Approved Supervisor in Tennessee, National Certified Counselor, and Approved Clinical Supervisor. She has received extensive training in working with individuals who have experienced a traumatic event and is certified by the American Red Cross to work in areas of natural disaster. Katya is a member of the American Counseling Association, Tennessee Counseling Association, Tennessee Mental Health Counselors Association, and Chi Sigma Iota, an international honor society for students, professional counselors and counselor educators.
