🌊"What's your FLOW state?"🌊

We posed this question in our most recent blog, and it's worth revisiting. A “flow state” is that magical zone when time flies, focus sharpens, and you’re totally IN IT. So… what are you doing when that happens? What kind of environment helps you get there?

Now, here’s the twist: could your answer reveal what’s missing in your current career—or point you toward what’s next? If you're thinking about a career shift but aren't sure which way to go, you're not alone—and we're here to help you figure it out.

💡 Job Search Tip: Feeling stuck applying to jobs based on the title alone? It might be time to switch things up.

Instead of searching by job title, start by identifying companies you admire—places where you’d be excited to show up every day. Then, explore roles within those organizations that align with your skills and interests. This approach helps you be more strategic with your applications. Doing a bit of research up front can give you a better sense of whether the company—not just the job—is the right fit for you.

Rethink your strategy. Refresh your search. And remember, sometimes the best path forward isn’t the most obvious one. 👣

One of our clients Emmie Wade recently shared something that truly resonated with us and with the experiences of many others. In a world overflowing with information and self-discovery tools, it can be overwhelming to make sense of it all. Our goal is to help distill that complexity into a clear, concise insight—a “raindrop” of clarity you can easily understand and share with others.

"I can't thank Julie and the Know You Project enough! I moved back to Nashville knowing I did not want my life to look the same in 5 years, but I had trouble pin-pointing what was missing from the picture. I knew I had landed in the right spot after my first session with Julie. She will truly take the time (and use her many tools) to get to know you as an individual in order to understand what kind of environment would be best suited for you. Together, over the course of 8 sessions, we were able to identify unique strengths and interests, as well as conflicts and stressors, of mine that influence my everyday experience in the workplace. After taking what seemed like a hurricane and condensing it into a raindrop, I am now equipped with the self-knowledge to confidently make the next step in my career. Thank you, Julie!"

Last but certainly not least in our "sweet spot" series is the final ingredient -- ENVIRONMENT. ✨

While the previous components we’ve explored focus primarily on internal factors, identifying your ideal environment shifts the lens outward. Your work environment encompasses the external conditions that allow you to perform at your best—physically, emotionally, and professionally.

To help our clients define the type of environment in which they’re most likely to thrive, we guide them through a series of reflective questions, such as:

1) Do you prefer working independently in your own space, or do you thrive in collaborative environments?
2) Are you more comfortable with hands-on guidance from supervisors, or do you excel with a more autonomous, hands-off leadership style?
3) Do you enjoy variety in your daily responsibilities, or do you prefer a predictable, routine structure?
4) What qualities do you value most in a company’s culture?

In addition to these reflections, we strongly encourage clients to engage in job shadowing when possible. Experiencing a workplace firsthand provides invaluable insight into its environment—something no job description can fully convey.

As we continue our exploration of the"sweet spot" ingredients, we now turn our attention to VALUES. ✨

Values are the guiding principles or standards we use to evaluate choices and determine what matters most. In essence, they reflect what is truly important to us, and in turn, they shape our motivation, attitudes, behaviors, and goals.

In our work with clients, we utilize a values exercise where individuals review a list of 50+ potential values and narrow the list down to their top five. To begin reflecting on your own values, consider the following prompts:

-- Think of a difficult decision you made recently. What options were available? What did you choose—and why?
-- Reflect on your current goals. Do you notice any recurring themes or underlying motivations? What core priority or ideal are you ultimately pursuing?

Whether your values center on family, achievement, freedom, generosity, or something uniquely personal, these questions are designed to help you uncover what truly drives you. Understanding your values is a key step toward aligning your actions with your authentic self AND finding a work environment that shares the same.

Continuing our exploration of the "sweet spot" ingredients, the next one is SKILLS! ✨

Skills are LEARNED abilities, which is different from natural abilities aka strengths (see previous post). Skills can be divided into 3 categories:
-- people (relationship building, active listening, conflict management)
-- information (programming languages, data analysis, revenue forecasting)
-- things (machinery operations, food preparation, prescribing medication)

Since learned abilities often come from our experiences, we use an exercise where clients reflect on different life experiences to identify the skills they gained. You can try this on your own! First identify a pivotal experience; then answer these questions:

1) How did this life experience impact me?
2) What did I learn that I didn't know before?
3) What can I do better as a result of this experience?

Whether positive or negative, our experiences shape us and equip us with valuable transferable skills that we can confidently share about during our job hunt!

Now it's time to highlight one of our favorite "sweet spot" ingredients -- STRENGTHS! ✨

We leverage Gallup's CliftonStrengths assessment, which you may have taken before as part of a class or your job. According to Gallup, we are all born with innate talents – “a natural way of thinking, feeling or behaving.” When we spend time investing in our talents, we develop a strength – “the ability to consistently provide near-perfect performance.”

If you've never taken a strengths assessment before, here are some reflective questions to process on your own:

1) What comes naturally to me?
2) What compliments or positive feedback have I received regarding my abilities?
3) What differences have I noticed in the way I approach something compared to my coworkers or classmates? (This does not mean one way is "right" and the other "wrong", rather that we all have different strengths.)

If you've taken CliftonStrengths before, we'd love to hear what your top 5 strengths are! 👇
