Three ways to confirm they actually filed your taxes...
I hate that this has to be said but this happens way too much. Here’s how to double check.
I’m willing to bet you didn’t know you these three things are REQUIRED.
But if you have a professional file your taxes, these are non negotiables 👇
As tax season winds down (and you all have your taxes neatly filed away way before the deadline 😉) it’s an important reminder that just handing everything to a professional to file your taxes isn’t enough…
After all, you hold all the liability to make sure your tax return is prepared accurately and completely.
So after your return is ready for your review, (and you’ve reviewed it to make sure your personal information is correct at a minimum) make sure your tax professional is providing you with these three things:
1️⃣ Their name and PTIN (and signature) at the bottom of your tax return
If they are preparing tax returns for payment, their information and valid PTIN # must be at the bottom of your return. If you don’t see anything in the paid preparer section, time to speak up and ask. 🚩
2️⃣ A copy of your completed tax return
If I had $1 for every time a new client came to me with none of their old tax returns….
Guys, this super duper important! You need to have a copy of every single year’s tax return when it’s filed.
What if your tax professional goes out of business? Disappears suddenly? Just stash it away at the end of every year, just in case.
3️⃣ Notification that your return was accepted
Because truthfully, until you receive this, you have no confirmation that your tax return was actually filed (it could be sitting in a queue on someone’s desk somewhere)
I promise if you make sure these three things are provided by your tax professional every single year, you’ll save time, money, and frustration the longer you are in business.
Did any of these surprise you?
