Financial Angle: Payroll Does Not Pause

One reason business interruptions get stressful fast is because the bills do not stop just because the business had a bad day.

- Payroll still matters.
- Rent still matters.
- Vendor payments still matter.
- Loan payments still matter.
- Customers still expect communication.

That is why business stability is not just an operations issue. It is a financial issue.

--> A short disruption can become a cash flow problem if the business cannot keep selling, billing, scheduling, or collecting payments.

June is a good time to ask:

-> How long could we operate if revenue slowed for three days?
-> How would we collect payments if our normal system failed?
-> Who decides what gets paid first if cash gets tight?
-> Who communicates with customers before refunds or cancellations start?

These are not fear-based questions.

They are ownership questions.

Here is one of the simplest business stability moves for June:

Print one list.

Not a huge plan.
Not a binder.
One list.

Include:

- Staff phone numbers.
- Key vendor contacts.
- Insurance contact.
- Bank contact.
- Landlord or property manager.
- IT support.
- Payroll contact.
- Top customers or accounts.
- Backup payment option.
- Where important passwords or access instructions are kept.

Then put it somewhere your team can access if the internet is down.

A printed list will not solve every problem. But it can save precious time when everyone is looking around asking, “Who do we call?”

Small steps matter.

That is how stability is built.

There has been a lot of national conversation recently about FEMA, disaster responsibility, and how much more may fall on states and local communities.

For small businesses, the takeaway is simple:

- Do not build your plan around waiting.

After a disruption, outside help may come eventually. But your customers, employees, appointments, invoices, payroll, and service commitments are still sitting in front of you right away.

That is why local businesses need practical continuity/stability steps.

- A contact list.
- A payment workaround.
- A staff call-down plan.
- A customer message template.
- A backup vendor.
- A first-hour decision rule.

Preparedness does not have to be dramatic.

It just needs to be usable when the day goes wrong.

Most business disruptions do not start with a dramatic disaster.

They start with something ordinary:

- The internet drops.
- The phones stop working.
- The point-of-sale system will not connect.
- A key employee is out.
- A vendor misses a delivery.
- A storm delays opening.

The real cost is not always the event itself. The cost is the confusion after it.

- Lost time becomes lost revenue.
- Lost revenue becomes cash flow pressure.
- Cash flow pressure becomes delayed payments, upset customers, or rushed decisions.

That is why every small business needs a simple first-hour plan.

-> Not a giant binder.
-> Not a corporate manual.
-> Just a practical card that tells your team what to do first.

June Starts Before the Storm Starts

June is a good month to ask one simple question: If your business lost power, internet, phones, or access to your building tomorrow, what would your team do first?

Not what would you “eventually figure out.”

What would happen in the first hour?

That first hour matters because it affects customers, staff, payments, appointments, service calls, and confidence. A simple plan does not have to be complicated. It just needs to answer:

- Who makes the first decision?
- Who contacts staff?
- Who contacts customers?
- How do we keep taking payments or rescheduling work?
- What do we do if the owner is unavailable?

June is a good time to build that answer before the pressure is on.

That is what business stability is really about: protecting time, revenue, and trust before a disruption forces the issue.

FEMA reform may sound like a federal policy issue, but there is a practical message for business owners:

Outside help may not be fast, simple, automatic, or enough.

That does not mean every business needs a giant emergency plan. It does mean owners should know what happens first if disruption affects access, insurance, documentation, cash flow, customers, vendors, or daily operations.

Memorial Day is not simply a long weekend. It is a day set aside to remember the men and women who died while serving this country.

Since December 7, 1941, through early 2026, approximately 650,000 American service members have died on active duty. That number is hard to fully comprehend, because behind every one of those lives was a family, a story, a future, and someone who never came home.

Today, we remember them with gratitude and humility.

To the families who still carry that loss, please know your loved ones are not forgotten. Their sacrifice, and your sacrifice, remain part of the cost of the freedoms we too often take for granted.

May we pause, remember, and honor them well.

At the Chamber Breakfast, we talked about the cost of a “wonky Tuesday” — the ordinary business day when things do not shut down, but they do slow down.

The wrong person is out.
The password is missing.
A customer is waiting.
The owner gets pulled into another routine decision.

No one calls that a disaster, but it still costs time, revenue, and trust.

Thank you to everyone at the Chamber breakfast who took a few minutes to talk about what happens when a normal business day gets interrupted.

One of the resources I mentioned was the U.S. Chamber Foundation’s R4R program, which may provide a $5,000 recovery grant for eligible small businesses after a qualifying disaster. That is helpful, but the bigger point is this:

A grant is easier to pursue when your business already has the basics organized.

That means knowing who makes decisions, where key information is stored, how you communicate with customers, what vendors you depend on, and what you would do in the first hour if something went wrong.

Please Note --> There may also be changes ahead in how FEMA and other disaster support systems affect businesses, which makes local readiness even more important. Small businesses cannot afford to wait until a disaster declaration, outage, storm, staffing gap, or vendor issue creates confusion.

Simply put: I help business owners keep small disruptions from becoming expensive business problems.
