Years ago, as a classroom teacher, I gave the same assignment every year: write about where you see yourself in 5 years.

You'd think that's an easy one. But so many students pushed back — even in math class. It took me a while to understand why: they'd never really been given the space to dream, or to picture a future with any hope in it.

I still think about that a lot, especially now, working with teams facing change.

After 25+ years in strategic planning and organizational change, here's something I've come to believe: resistance is rarely just stubbornness. More often, it's scar tissue — left over from failed rollouts, promises that quietly disappeared, and effort that went unrewarded.

People won't fight for a better future if they don't believe it's actually possible.

So before rolling out a new plan or structure, the real work is helping people trust that this time really can be different.

That's what I see mission-driven leaders doing every single day — in nonprofits, schools, government, and community organizations. It's not just about managing projects or writing grants. It's about helping people find hope again.
