Most owners are answering questions they shouldn't be.

At last week's Access National Conference, I walked through a simple framework: separate your decisions into Strategic, Operational, and Tactical tiers and only stay in Tier 1.

The goal isn't to be less involved. It's to be involved in the right things.

Great room, great conversations. Grateful for the opportunity.

Spent this week at the ACCESS National Conference connecting with restoration leaders, carriers, and industry partners from across the country.

Grateful for the opportunity to present on building stronger business operating systems and reducing the owner bottleneck. The conversations in and outside the sessions reinforced something important: the companies that scale well during disruption are the ones with clear structure, alignment, and decision-making processes already in place.

Beyond the presentation, one of the biggest highlights was the number of great partnership meetings throughout the week. A lot of productive conversations took place around operational improvement, collaboration, and where the industry is headed next.

Looking forward to what comes out of several of those discussions. There are some exciting things ahead!

Thanks to everyone who took the time to connect this week. Great event, great people, and a lot of momentum heading into the rest of 2026.

“What’s that weird look on my face?”
That’s the look of satisfaction.

I was running through a practice session for next week’s ACCESS National Conference presentation and working hard to land right on the 45-minute mark. Timing matters, but delivering value matters more.

I’ll keep refining it because the owners attending are taking valuable time away from their businesses, teams, and customers to be there. My goal is to make sure every minute is practical, relevant, and worth the investment.

Looking forward to sharing:

See you next week!

You never know who’s watching!

My daughter happened to be at the same Starbucks while I was meeting with David Rutz from David Allen Capital. She caught us mid-conversation and then we had to take the “official” photo.

The candid pic tells the real story.

Some of the best conversations happen over coffee. No agenda, no slides, just two people talking through ideas and opportunities.

Thanks for the time, David. And thanks for the candid, Avery Shippe.

I presented a proposal today. (Yes, that's the actual proposal on the screen!) The owner listened, asked good questions, and was completely open about where they are. They don't have all the answers, they're exploring a few different options, and they have zero interest in a one-size-fits-all approach.

Neither do I.

The best engagements I've had started exactly like this. No pressure, just two people figuring out if there's a real fit. I'll take those conversations all day long.

Are you running a business and open to an honest conversation about what's holding it back? My calendar is open.

Also props to Sara M Shippe for always being on the lookout for action shots!

That's me in the back seat at 5,500 feet.

My 17-year-old son was riding right seat, while his 19-year-old buddy was at the controls. And I was in the back seat with no yoke, no rudder pedals, and no say in the matter.

For someone who has spent a career being the one in charge, that took some getting used to. But here's what I noticed once I stopped white-knuckling the seatbelt:

He'd done the preflight. He'd run the checklist. He'd been trained by people who knew what they were doing. The work had already happened. My job in that moment wasn't to fly the plane. It was to trust that he could.

Leadership has the same arc. You hire well. You teach. You set the standard. And then at some point, you have to climb into the back seat and let someone else fly.

It is harder than it sounds! It is also one of the most rewarding views you'll ever get.

Proud of this kid and grateful for the reminder.

It's one of those rare perfect spring days in Michigan. Warm sun, working on the deck with my assistant, and good energy.

On days like this, I think about what it actually means to build a business that gives you freedom.

Not just revenue. Freedom.

That only happens when your operations are solid. When things run without you holding them together.

If that's not your reality yet, let's talk.

My coffee cup told me to get an early start at being awesome. So here I am working on some content that I know will resonate with a lot of business owners.

You can do it better than anyone else. You know the consequences if someone screws it up. You have people relying on your decisions.

None of that is wrong, but it might be exactly what's slowing your company down.

Working on a presentation for the Access National Conference, and I can't wait to be in a room full of owners who know this feeling.

Slow decisions during a CAT response or any surge don't just slow you down. They cost you jobs, crews, and clients.

I'm heading to the ACCESS National Conference in Orlando to talk about exactly that topic. The Owner Bottleneck During CAT Response: The Hidden Cost of Slow Decisions.

If your company scales up during a CAT event and you're still the one every decision runs through, we need to talk. But here's the thing, we're using CAT response as the lens, not the limit. Everything we cover applies to how you run your business every single day!

You'll walk away with a 30 day plan to start removing yourself as the bottleneck and building an operation that doesn't stall every time it needs you.

Send me a message to set up a meeting or come and find me May 18-21 at Rosen Shingle Creek in Orlando.

This week I had 7 meetings that had nothing to do with me trying to make a sale, which is a big commitment when you are trying to consistently grow your own business.

Every conversation was unique in its own way, and all of them were worth spending time that could have gone towards business development.

Someone advising me on where my business needs to go. A networking group that reminded me I don't have to figure this out alone. A referral I made because someone in my network deserved a shot at a great opportunity. And a conversation where someone took the time to educate me on a topic I needed to understand better.

No selling. Just investing in people, relationships and myself.

That's the kind of week that doesn't show up on a sales report, but it absolutely makes what I'm doing worth it.
