A little history about my poetry journey!
I wrote poetry before the short stories and stage plays at the age 14! I would write and type them on my typewriter. I would keep them in a binder tucked away. The world knew nothing about it. I didn’t do the poetry scenes. I wasn’t in poetry contest. I didn’t have poet friends or even belong to that community.
I just felt and wrote my emotions on paper. I remember writing them and asking myself. How do I know these things at my age. It was quite astonishing. But one day I felt the courage to show my mother. I don’t know if it was insecurities or what.
But I was quite private about my writings until my thirties. I started writing and doing monologues in 2009. I went to a few poetry spots and read my work.
I noticed how highly saturated and clickish it was. I noticed some were completely different in person. So passionate on stage, but so cold and stale in real life. I remember one event I went to. I did a monologue and it was quite powerful. I was ignored and people were talking while I was performing.🤦🏾♀️ I felt disrespected and left feeling embarrassed. I never went to those spaces again.
I decided to create my own events, open mics and that is when I started writing more stories, plays, etc. I got a Local Television show and used my gifts there. I created my own lane where my voice could be heard. Never let people stop you because of their own insecurities. It’s not you, it’s them!
Your anointing will offend people, you just have to know your audience and who will embrace your work, voice and talents. The first two pictures are at Cafe Istanbul NOLA in year 2014! I was doing a spoken word piece at my own production. By the way, the hat on these pictures is one of my trademark looks. I buy a new one every year🥰😀🔥
