Collecting signals is the easy part.

Almost nobody has decided what happens next.

Which accounts engaged, who visited, which companies your ads reached. LinkedIn's own company data made a lot of this visible that wasn't before.

And it still ends up in a dashboard nobody opens, because the step after collection has no owner.

When we look at where signal data actually earns its keep, it comes down to whether it changed a decision. Usually one of three.

Who sales calls this week. And we don't mean a scored list nobody trusts. We mean the handful of accounts that have been seeing you for two months and just came back to the site.

What gets retargeted. Engaged accounts should move into a named segment while they're still warm.

Where the budget goes. If a message pulled engagement from your best-fit accounts, that's the one to fund.

If none of those three changed this month, the signals didn't do anything.

So before you buy another data source, answer the cheaper question first. Who looks at the data you already have, and on what day?

Your lead count can look fine while the wrong people are arriving.

B2B sites pull a steady mix of students, job seekers, competitors doing research and people who are never going to buy. All of it gets counted. Some of it gets reported as growth.

So before the pipeline conversation, there's a simpler question. Of everyone landing on your site, how many actually match the people you sell to?

We've run that comparison two ways. Baseline site traffic, and traffic arriving from the program.

On one account, baseline traffic matched the ICP 37% of the time. Traffic from the program matched it 78%. Same site and same month, completely different people.

That gap tells you whether the targeting is right before the lead volume is big enough to tell you anything.

And if the two numbers come back the same, the targeting isn't working, no matter what the cost per lead says.

Pull both numbers this week. Baseline, and program traffic. If you can't separate them, that's the first thing to fix.

You had a post that worked. Comments from the right people, shares from accounts you'd love to sell to.

Then paid launched something else, at a cold audience that never saw the post.

That's the gap our loop is built to close. A post that lands already tells you which message works and who it works on.

So the founder post runs. The people who engaged become a named audience.

Paid puts budget behind the message the post already proved.

And whatever engagement the ads create flows back into the pool, so the audience the next campaign draws from keeps growing.

Your best organic post is a targeting asset. Treat it like one.

Onboarding with a new marketing partner tends to start with a deck of opinions, then a media plan built on top of them.

We start somewhere else. Before a single ad runs, four artifacts go on the table.

They're built from signal: your CRM, LinkedIn paid, LinkedIn organic, and the companies and people on your site.

01 Coverage funnel: how much of your real buying audience the current motion reaches, stage by stage.

02 Multi-signal board: which accounts show more than one signal at once, and which combinations are worth acting on.

03 Persona verdicts: the people engaging with you, sorted into actual buyers and the ones we exclude on purpose.

04 Waste map: where spend is landing that no buyer will ever see.

The strategy gets written once all four exist.

This is what the work looks like before the ads do. Follow the page to see more of it.

Most teams start LinkedIn Ads in the hardest possible spot: cold native filters, aimed at buyers who have never heard of you.

When that underperforms, we hear the channel called expensive.

The order of operations was the actual problem. The audiences closest to revenue got nothing.

At AMA San Antonio, Justin Rowe ranked the starting points instead. The full ladder is in the graphic, and the logic is simple: the closer an audience already is to trusting you, the earlier it should see budget. That is where the efficiency lives.

The top rung is first-party data.

Layer LinkedIn ads onto the pipeline, past clients, and email lists you already work, and show-up rates, close rates, and deal sizes start to improve on your existing pipeline.

Cold native reach is real. It's just the last thing to launch, not the first.

Marketing proved the program was working. Sales proved it wasn't. Both were right.

That is the trap in cold-only LinkedIn accounts. Lead gen forms pointed at cold audiences will produce leads, so the dashboards look fine at first.

Then the sentence that kills the program arrives: 𝘞𝘦'𝘳𝘦 𝘯𝘰𝘡 𝘀𝘭𝘰𝘴π˜ͺ𝘯𝘨 𝘒𝘯𝘺 𝘰𝘧 𝘡𝘩𝘦𝘴𝘦 𝘭𝘦𝘒π˜₯𝘴.

Quality gets questioned, HubSpot can't confirm what closed, and the budget gets pulled. The channel takes the blame for a structural problem.

Justin Rowe sees the same shape in audit after audit: hundreds of thousands in spend, zero retargeting. The site visitors and ad engagers already in those accounts, the exact people a retargeting layer exists to convert, get none of the budget.

If you are already investing in paid search, a LinkedIn retargeting layer should improve the overall ROI of that investment in most cases.

What's your current split between cold audiences and warm?

Install the LinkedIn Insight Tag this week, even if you have zero plans to run ads.

The tag costs nothing, and you can let the audiences it builds pool long before you ever spend.

Think about what happens after someone clicks your Google ad today: they land on your site, compare you against three or four competitors, and leave. Without a retargeting layer, that expensive visit is gone.

Put the tag in place and every one of those visits joins an audience instead, whatever channel brought them in.

When you are ready to spend, there is no cold start.

Layer LinkedIn's qualifying filters onto that warm pool and run a light retargeting campaign against the best-fit accounts already in your ecosystem, extracting more value from traffic you already paid for.

That is the play Justin Rowe walked through at AMA San Antonio. Everyone comes for the targeting. The tag is the superpower.

Nobody opens Facebook hoping to be sold to.

That is a big part of why LinkedIn charges a premium: it reaches buyers in a different mental state. The CPC objections we hear tend to skip that variable.

People log into LinkedIn already in work mode. As Justin Rowe put it at AMA San Antonio, they show up thinking: [ITALIC: What tools do people use? What new strategies are out there? What agency partners are others using?]

The context is the product. Your ad lands inside a buying question that is already open, instead of squeezing in between videos someone actually came to watch.

A cheaper click in the wrong context is not a bargain. It is a distraction you paid for.

Yeah yeah, restaurant guy turned LinkedIn guy. Youve heard it.

But theres one detail in that story that actually matters if youre trying to get something out of this platform, and it isnt the cease and desist letter.

I came to LinkedIn thinking it was basically Indeed with a better logo. Updated my profile and started sending 50 connection requests a day to anyone who might have something for me.

That worked... a little too well.

It turned into a lead gen agency I never set out to build, that agency eventually got acquired, and somewhere along the way LinkedIn shut our company page down entirely.

But the connection requests are the thing. That habit is STILL the highest return move on the platform and almost nobody does it. 10 or 15 a day, targeted. Thats it.

Rest of the story in the clip πŸ‘‡

Told this one at AMA San Antonio this week. Group link in the first comment.

Seven out of ten competitors usually claim to be different in exactly the same way.

You only find that out if you read all ten sites side by side, which is why most positioning work skips the step entirely.

Our founder Justin Rowe it with AI instead. A recon pass on the company's own site, then the same pass across ten competitors, then a report on what actually holds up as a difference once everyone's claims are on the table.

He calls it the white space report. What's left after the overlap is where the messaging goes.

The reporting use is quieter and probably more valuable. Load that context into a project, then drop raw campaign numbers in. The analysis already knows who you sell to before it tells you whether the numbers are good.
