Dr. Karima Clayton received her Ph.D. in Counseling Psychology from Columbia University. An organizational consultant and licensed psychologist, Dr. Clayton directs the WorkHaven Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Program, providing trainings, webinars, and organizational and executive leadership consultation. She is currently employed within the VA-NY Harbor Healthcare System, where she co-leads the Diversity Committee within the Psychology Department. Dr. Clayton also chairs the Diversity Advisory Council which has identified and implements initiatives related to diversity to promote a more inclusive environment for staff and Veterans in the broader hospital system. She has provided national DEI related trainings and webinars focused on topics including, but not limited to, navigating discussions effectively about race and racism and understanding the psychological effects of racism. Dr. Clayton has engaged actively in a range of DEI-related research, including DEI in the workplace, race and racial identity, race-based traumatic stress, minority mental health, incarceration and the collateral consequences, youth development, and dementia caregivers.

Meet Kathryn

Dr. Kathryn Bryan is an organizational consultant and licensed psychologist in Atlanta, Georgia, specializing in trauma, grief & loss, infertility/reproductive health, spirituality, and work/life balance. She earned her PhD in Counseling Psychology from the University of Georgia, where her research focused on secondary trauma among clergy working with Latinx immigrant trauma survivors. Prior to completing her PhD, Dr. Bryan worked with child trauma survivors in the therapeutic foster care and juvenile justice systems, and in recovery programming for homeless and marginally-housed adults living with schizophrenia. In addition, she completed her MDiv at Emory University and is experienced at integrating spirituality and diverse faith traditions into psychotherapy. Dr. Bryan is passionate about providing strength-based, trauma-informed, and culturally competent consulting and psychological services

Dr. Jennifer Buckley is an organizational consultant who specializes in workplace resilience. While she has particular expertise with family defense and immigration legal practices, Dr. Buckley has worked with a range of non-profit organizations seeking to develop a culture of strength and flexibility. Whether providing trainings, leading retreats, or facilitating specialized resilience groups, Dr. Buckley creates space for exploration and reflection and offers education and essential tools for workers navigating challenging systems and complicated client relationships. Dr. Buckley received her PhD from Long Island University, Brooklyn where her research focused on the impact of trauma on substance abuse treatment outcomes and the effects of community violence. Throughout her career, Dr. Buckley has specialized in trauma-informed psychological services, directing programs and serving clients in a range of settings, including residential treatment programs, homeless shelters, community mental health centers and inpatient hospital settings.

According to the research of Downey and colleagues (2015), employee perceptions of their organization’s diversity practices were related to their levels of engagement. Their research ultimately implied that organizations that actively seek to promote employee inclusion also increase employee performance.

Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion are mutually reinforcing principles within an organization. A focus on diversity alone is insufficient because an employee’s sense of belonging (inclusion) and experience of fairness (equity) is critically important.

Meet Mark!

Mark Evces is an organizational consultant and clinical psychologist who has worked with scores of organizations and leaders to promote healthy, inclusive and generative work environments. Prior to founding WorkHaven, he served as the Assistant Director of Mental Health in the NYU School of Medicine WTC Health Program Clinical Center of Excellence, and Clinical Instructor of Psychiatry at the NYU School of Medicine. He has worked across a variety of public mental health clinical, training and research settings. Dr. Evces, with Gertie Quitangon, MD, co-edited Vicarious Trauma and Disaster Mental Health: Understanding Risks and Promoting Resilience, published by Routledge Press in 2015.

Meet Michelle!

Michelle Herrera, Ph.D. consults with nonprofit legal service organizations to promote workplace effectiveness and overall well-being. Her interests include promoting equity for culturally diverse and marginalized groups, as well as enhancing productivity for individuals working with highly traumatized populations. Michelle has extensive training in forensic psychology* and has worked with varying trauma-exposed populations, including active and veteran servicemen and women, incarcerated mothers, and immigrants and refugees.

She has a special interest in consulting with organizations that emphasize social justice and policy reform. Michelle has provided services to immigration/refugee organizations, family legal groups, and crisis response teams, among others. She is personally engaged in nonprofit work including her work with the Society for the Psychological Study of Social Issues (SPSSI) at the United Nations and her annual services trips as a volunteer legal aid for the Dilley Pro Bono Project, where she interviews women and children at a family detention center in order to provide legal aid and education prior to in-house credible fear interviews.

Through her work as a consultant she leads resilience groups, provides individual resilience coaching, and promotes wellness in the workplace through presentations, feedback sessions and co-leading WorkHaven’s Assessment and Metrics Program, ensuring that consultations are effectively implemented.
