HISTORY MADE. 🖤🏳️🌈
On September 24, 2026, the New York City Council adopted Resolution 606, officially declaring August as Black Pride Month in the City of New York.
Destination Tomorrow is incredibly proud to have been instrumental in helping move this resolution forward, working alongside community leaders and government partners to ensure that the history, contributions, culture and resilience of Black LGBTQIA+ New Yorkers receive the recognition they deserve.
This moment is bigger than any one organization or individual.
As we approach the 30th anniversary of NYC Black Pride in 2027, this recognition honors a movement built over decades by Black LGBTQIA+ people who created space, built community and demanded visibility—often long before institutions were willing to recognize us.
We stand on the shoulders of leaders including James Saunders, Fred Pierce, Kim Ford, Laurence Pinkney, Gary English, Lee Soulja and Michael Roberson, and so many others whose work made this moment possible.
We extend our gratitude to Council Member Althea Stevens, who sponsored Resolution 606, the members of the New York City Council who supported its passage, Bronx Borough President Vanessa Gibson, Public Advocate Jumaane Williams, Sage Rivera, and the advocates and community members who helped push this work forward.
Black LGBTQIA+ history is New York City history.
Black LGBTQIA+ history is American history.
And now, every August, New York City will officially recognize and celebrate it.
This is what happens when community, advocacy and government work together to turn recognition into action.
