That is why Book Pitch was formed—to guide people in the process of making their dreams reality through clear concepts, the strongest of their work, and information on the professionals you need by your side and the anticipated cost for their expertise. Self-production is a great way to move your idea into tangible form, and feel the affirmation of completion.

Two Book Pitch consultations this week. We love seeing this service motivate people forward on their projects.

One of the most important, and most difficult aspects of personal projects is staying true to the core of what you want to say.

When we ask authors to consider their book and its potential audience, and offer feedback on those answers, we direct them back to some clarity around their own goals, and then articulate a path to get there. The answers aren't always what people want to hear, but they are the stepping stones to go from idea to reality. And getting people toward their book dream becoming reality is what we're all about.

Every single book has had its own trajectory to come into being—there were challenges, miraculous opportunities, and fortuitous meetings that led to the right essayist, a last-minute patron or a stubborn editor who made sure, against the odds, that the book would happen.

I am reminded that today, and every day, that as creative people we are here to showcase what may otherwise go unseen. Books are such a powerful way to tell our stories.

Are you fascinated with the materiality of a book? We are, too. Paper that ages gracefully, binding that will last over time, determining whether there should be a printed cover or a jacket, what physical size best suits the artwork.

Gary Hawkey of in Seattle was the first print broker to show me a few different papers under a black light that revealed chemical brighteners, making a substrate appear bright white today, but which will eventually yellow as it ages. We value colleagues like Gary who provide up-to-date information about best practices in the industry, so we can make responsible choices for paper and printing, as well as share that knowledge with others.

When much of the world is in turmoil from natural disaster and human conflict, it can be difficult to convince ourselves of the significance of our gentle book pursuit. Our experience of contemporary art through the contained and intimate form of the printed book can be a balm, an inspiration, and a reckoning, reminding us that we choose who and how to be in this world. While we cannot always affect the macro challenges we face, the little things that bring grace and awareness really do matter.
