The military uses infrared technology in their night vision to help personnel defend an area or scan for threats in the form of tanks or people who may wish to them harm. In most cases, when using these devices, things appear with a greenish tint because of the way the light reflects off of the landscape. Most forms of infrared energy can be seen and measured only with the use of specialized equipment such as infrared cameras, telescopes or night-vision goggles.

The science of is one of the most important areas of astronomy. Spectroscopy is the study of an object’s composition by examining the light it emits. Light emitted by an object such as a star contains the information of what that star is made of.

Stars are the primary sources of light in the universe, and so spectroscopy generally involves starlight. Certain types of nebulae emit their own light, which allows scientists to determine their composition as well. Perhaps one of the more interesting applications of spectroscopy is the analysis of planetary atmospheres. As planets pass in front of their star, light from that star has to pass through the planet’s atmosphere. The star’s photons will be absorbed by the atoms in the planet’s atmosphere and then emitted back into space.

ZINC SELENIDE

Zinc Selenide (ZnSe) is widely used in infrared spectroscopy. Zinc Selenide is produced by synthesis from Zinc v***r and H2Se gas, forming as sheets on Graphite susceptors. Zinc Selenide is microcrystalline in structure, the grain size being controlled to produce maximum strength. ZnSe is a preferred material for lenses, windows, output couplers, and beam expanders, due to its low absorptivity at infrared wavelengths and its visible transmission. Chemically inert, non-hygroscopic, highly pure, theoretically dense and easily machined. It has extremely low bulk losses due to absorption and scatter, has a high resistance to thermal shock and is stable in virtually all environments.

Silicon IR lenses, windows, witness samples and mirrors are available from our Brooklyn, NY location. We are well versed in design and manufacturing of IR components, sub-systems and full assemblies. From design and manufacture, to coating and assembly, we are your one stop shop!

Usually, silicon is considered as the material of choice for systems operating in the Middle Infrared (MIR) Region, from 3 to 5 µm. But the material may be used in the much broader operating range from 1.2µm to 7µm or even higher. Typical applications include NIR imaging or IR spectroscopy. The single crystal of used in semiconductor has low absorption in the infrared wavelength of 1.2 – 7μm and it can be used as an optical element of infrared light.
