What a Retained Search Actually Is — And What Recruiters Really Do
One of the biggest misconceptions I encounter as a retained executive recruiter is this:
Candidates often believe recruiters work for them.
I understand why. From the outside, it can appear that recruiters are career agents — opening doors, advocating for talent, connecting people to opportunities.
And while great recruiters absolutely build long-term relationships with candidates and often become trusted advisors over time, in a retained search model, our client, the brand, is ultimately the star of the show.
That distinction matters. Check out my new monthly Substack dispatch by following the co-lab on substack. I will post the link in my bio and story. I get into why it’s so great to join communities like when you don’t need anything urgently! Check it out. Xx
