What a Retained Search Actually Is — And What Recruiters Really Do
One of the biggest misconceptions I encounter as a retained executive recruiter is this:
Candidates often believe recruiters work for them.
I understand why. From the outside, it can appear that recruiters are career agents — opening doors, advocating for talent, connecting people to opportunities.
And while great recruiters absolutely build long-term relationships with candidates and often become trusted advisors over time, in a retained search model, our client, the brand, is ultimately the star of the show.

The structure of a search shapes the outcome.

I work retained and exclusively so the process is focused, discreet and fully committed from the start, from both sides. Everything I do is within luxury, fashion and consumer retail, which allows for a level of specialization that leads to stronger judgment and better alignment.

Most of the candidates I place are not actively searching for a new role. They are passive candidates identified by our team, approached professionally and engaged thoughtfully. That requires clear communication and trust early on, so expectations are aligned and momentum is not lost.

At its core, this work is built on long term relationships and a deep understanding of the market. The best searches are not transactional. They are grounded in trust, context and a deep understanding of both the brand and the long term vision of building a business and an individual candidate’s career.

The gap between where you are and what is next is usually filled with questions no one talks about out loud.
