Project: Waste Less Food

How was everyone’s Memorial Day weekend?! With all the BBQ leftovers, I know many of you are feeling like you need a second refrigerator. Don’t fret! It’s time for a new project.

One of the things I hate most is wasted food. A good way to avoid wasting food is by keeping your fridge organized by category. Everyone’s eating habits are different, but here is a snapshot of our fridge before and after this project. Try to keep healthy items like fruit on the top shelf so that it’s at eye level and you see it first when you go in for a snack. When you bring home doggie bags from restaurants, take the food containers out of the bag so that they are visible and you remember to eat them. Remember that fancy containers are not necessary—you can tackle this project without spending any money, in less than 10 minutes. Photo ©2015 William Ross

If you’re always running out the door last-minute like I am, try cutting down on the options at the door. This is what the entryway looks like in our apartment in Harlem. Will and I each keep 2 jackets, 3 pairs of shoes, and one umbrella by the door. With all the things you would need to face springtime in the city one step away from the front door, you can make a smooth exit in no time.

Quick tip: For yucky weather weeks, you can keep a boot tray on the top shelf of your shoe rack to keep the mess contained. and per usual photo © 2015 William Ross
