"How we view people socially from their voice, influences how we attend to them, how we listen to them."
Over the years I traveled from city to city. Each with their own rhythms and delivery styles, NY, Tel Aviv, Miami, Jamaica, and San Francisco. Even just the diversity of neighborhoods within any of those could vary greatly.
I fell into a habit intuitively of turning up or down my vocal range, speed and tone to either accentuate that I was a part of things, or that I was foreign and exotic.
It is always stunning to see how impactful playing with just that element can be with penetrating a new territory or scene.

Research shows listeners tend to have a bias against female voices, even when they're saying the same thing as a man.

You do not need to “be seen” before pursuing your ideas. Enjoy yourself. Work. Create. Add value. Do what you can, consider everything an experiment to be held lightly, and then see what it leads to. Trust that in the doing, you are learning and growing, and being powerful.

“I dream about you a lot these days,” I say to my dad.

“And for some reason I show you up in your dreams,” he responds, laughing. It doesn’t feel like I’m dreaming. His voice is clear. The wisps of his grey hair are fine and crisp. I see the individual strands layered on top of each other. I always forget that I’m dreaming until he reminds me. He seems so real.

“I think it’s because I’m getting older that I dream more of you. Not to mention that stress makes me crazy.”
