"Go west, young man. Seek your fortune in the bright lights of New York City!"
12 years ago to this day, I've packed my bags and moved from Switzerland to the United States. New York City, to be exact. A sleepy little town in the countryside where a man could escape society and live in peace, if he wished it.
I remember the first few weeks in New York like it was yesterday. I had moved to an entirely new country, where I didn't know a soul. And I loved it!
It's was a giant beehive, pulsing with energy and full of wonders. The streets were an adventure, filled with interesting people, the stores were bustling with business, and the subway was a wonderland of sights and sounds.
I had landed in the center of the most exciting city in the world. And I wanted to explore every corner and taste of it. I took trips to the Statue of Liberty and climbed Brooklyn bridge. I saw Central Park, The Metropolitan Museum, Times Square, Broadway's theaters, and some truly amazing performances!
I'm very glad I was able to make this transition. But that's not where my story ends. It was only the beginning of an adventure, which still continues to this day.
It's a cool morning and I can hear the birds singing. A family of squirrels scurries down the tree in front of me, and there it is. That feeling that I've got in my heart. I can't quite put my finger on it.
But something feels right.
