The installation of an off-grid hydro-electric power system for the remote community of Imaki on Tanna Island in Vanuatu.

Following the loss of the power system after Hurricane Pam, Imaki were without a sustainable power supply for the best part of a decade. Ecoinnovation became aware of this project and with the help of Independent Power Ltd installed 2 Powerspout hydro turbines with Victron power control equipment.

Great to see good work in the UK. We are in Vanuatu ourselves fixing up and upgrading a hydro/PV power system for Imaki Village on Tanna Island. I will post some pictures once we have it all going.

I love Powerspout. For example here is an email I got today:
"Hi Hugh

Well it's been almost a year since I ordered my hydro from you and I've just got it commissioned over the last few days. Must say that I am very impressed and this is going to be the answer to all my power needs during the winter solar drought. The system seems to be working better than anticipated and I'm loving constant 24/7 generation!

275m approx PE100 pipe with 78mm bore connected to 2x 12.2mm jets

Static pressure 42psi dynamic pressure 37psi

230m 6.0mm electrical cable run

VoC at turbine 205v (so safe with midnite classic 250)

The midnite classic I'm using shows a steady 550w

This is more than the original output but the static pressure indicates that I have more than the 25m head, I was able to site unit further downstream. I'm guessing that with extra dynamic pressure I am moving more than 4 l/s though the 12.2mm jets and hence extra power?

I enclose an installation pictures, currently on a platform over the stream. I intend to dig out the bank next summer and make a proper shed.
