In the spirit of National Women’s History month, we would like to feature two organizations who offer great support to those underrepresented in the construction industry. As a women-owned small business, it is important to NERIS to elevate and share those with similar missions and values.

The National Association of Women in Construction is a network of women who have come together in a field that is traditionally dominated by men. Through its 115 chapters in the United States, NAWIC provides members with professional and educational opportunities that help women progress and create an even larger impact on the industry. The National Association of Minority Contractors focuses on 25 million minority workers who make up the construction industry workforce. As the oldest minority construction trade association in America, they use their power to provide access, advocacy and contractor readiness to their members. The United Brotherhood of Carpenters and Joiners of America has existed for 140 years and accumulated over a half a million members. Within this union is Sisters of the Brotherhood, a network of female members who strive to increase the number and diversity of women within the UBC. It is important this month and every month to encourage women's involvement within the construction industry and recognize their goals and achievements.

Tamera Rivera is a prominent member of the UBC and SIB and was even the first woman council representative in her union. She is a great leader who works to build awareness surrounding the role of women in the industry and diversity. She is a powerful force within the construction community and is well-deserving of all her recognition.

Being a member of a male-dominated industry, NERIS has taken great strides in promoting female leadership and employment in disaster consulting and environmental compliance work. In order to provide continued support for women in all businesses and industry, we would like to feature the amazing accomplishments of women nationwide.

Since 2017, Mary Erikson has commanded her role as the National Weather Service’s deputy director. Beyond the work that Erikson does daily with the National Weather System, she aims to foster an encouraging environment for women in STEM careers. She mentors female scientists and led an immense effort within the National Weather Service to determine ways in which the recruitment, retention, and inclusion of women can be improved upon.
