This one is heavy. There are no words big enough to thank you for the life you gave me.
You weren’t just my grandma. You were my mom in every way that mattered. You raised me, protected me, believed in me, and loved me through every season of my life. Good or Bad. You taught me what strength looked like. You taught me how to stand tall, speak my mind, and never let the world make me feel small. Everyone knew you as Chavez. A proud Puerto Rican woman who was spicy and confident, you had a heart big enough for everyone, and a spirit that could light up any room. You were tough, fearless, funny, and full of life. You helped so many people without ever asking for anything in return. That’s just who you were.
But to me, you were so much more. My everything. We were two peas in a pod. Everyone who knew us knew how inseparable we were. You weren’t just my safe place, you were my best friend. I could tell you anything. There was never a fear of being judged. You never tried to change who I was. You let me be me. You loved every version of me through every season of my life, and because of that I’m the woman I am today.
I wish I had one more chance to tell you how extraordinary you are. How grateful I am for you. I wish I could hold your hand one more time and tell you thank you for every sacrifice you made for me, my siblings and your own children. Every lesson you taught me, every hug, every prayer, and every moment you stood beside me.
I’m sorry I didn’t make it to New York before you spread your wings. That’ll always hurt. But I hope you knew, without a doubt, how deeply you were loved. Because you were. You still are and always will be. Everything good in me carries a piece of you. The way I love people. The dreams I refuse to give up on. The strength I find when life gets hard. Those are gifts you gave me.
I promise to keep making you proud.
