Mike’s Story
Mike has been a baker all his life, since he was 5 actually working with his Dad and Grandfather. At that age, he would stand on a milk crate and watch his amazing grandfather making all the old school Italian Pastries from scratch. He was always amazed while watching him make Cannoli shells or even how sfogliatelle was made. Marchese Bakery was located on Hylan Boulevard in Staten Island in the 1980s. It was one of the best known bakeries at that time. Til today, if you mention the name, people remember when it was around and always mention how they miss the bakery and their delicious bakery items. Even though there is no more family bakery and sad to say his dad and grandpa have since passed, Mike still manages to keep those delicious recipes and traditional cakes alive. Just a year or so ago, he created his own company, Cakes & Chocolates by Mike. Even though Superstorm Sandy took all his equipment, he still manages to make his delicious family recipes at home as well as adding chocolate pretzels and other chocolate delights to his venue. You want a cheesecake, he's the man to make it.
I should know, I have been his wife for 30 years and dating since we were 14. I watched his talent grow with that business and witnessed the passion in his eyes as he was working with his wonderful grandfather and getting all his baking tips from his dad. I know he misses that time in his life terribly. Marchese Bakery was truly a family business. Everyone who worked there was a family member and if you weren’t blood it didn’t matter, you were still family. I am so proud to have been a part of that world. I am so proud and honored to be able to still see him continue the family tradition by keeping these recipes alive.
