Process video of “The Bean”
I placed the figure with the mask in the middle because I wanted it to be a reflection of the present reality, the new normal, as much as it is a reflection of Chicago. I wanted to capture the reflected light hitting the surface of the buildings and highlighting the silhouettes of the figure. I chose to simplify the buildings in the background into flat gradient shapes because their purpose is to hold the space that will help the eye navigate the scene on the middle and foreground.
The sketch you see in the beginning was made from observation in the park. I then finished painting when I got home, basing everything from reference pictures and memory.
