Happy 80th Birthday to Michael Tilson Thomas, an extraordinary musician with whom we are grateful to work in myriad ways. MTT’s own music, which we have published for many decades, can be thoroughly enjoyed and explored with Grace, an enchanting box set released on Pentatone in 2024. MTT has also been a longtime champion of various Wise Music composers, from John Adams to George Crumb to Charles Ives. Here he is in 2012, performing John Cage’s “Song Books” with Meredith Monk and Joan La Barbara. Many more happy returns, Michael!

Kaija Saariaho has received a GRAMMY nomination for Best Contemporary Classical Composition, for her opera Adriana Mater. Four additional GRAMMY nominations have also gone to recordings of Adriana Mater, Florencia en el Amazonas by Daniel Catán, The Holy Presence of Joan d'Arc by Julius Eastman, and various works by Jean Sibelius. We wish these composers could be alive today to hear the wonderful new recordings of their work that have been recognized by the Recording Academy, and congratulate all of the performers involved with these spectacular releases.
