How far does a performing arts center extend beyond its own walls? What do you do when you want to take the performing arts outdoors—but your theater is wedged into a downtown block with barely a patch of grass in sight?

The Flynn is a 1,400-seat historic theater tightly wedged into downtown Burlington—a Broadway touring house, concert venue, home for dance, theater, jazz, family programming and much more. Not exactly blessed with a big lawn out back. So the ED, Jay Wahl looked past the walls of the theater—and found a whole state outside them.

Five years ago, The Flynn started Playing Fields with just two school communities. This September, Plasticiens Volants with Unicycle Productions are about to descend on Vermont for 14 free performances in schoolyards, playing fields, parks and even the Vermont Statehouse lawn.

It has taken a village: years of work by Jay and The Flynn building relationships across Vermont; enormous investment by Plasticiens Volants over the preceding months—and much more once they arrive; and funders, sponsors, local partners and communities all doing their part.

That’s a conversation worth continuing at Western Arts Alliance next week. Yes, it’s complicated. Yes, it takes many hands and many kinds of support. But look what becomes possible when we look beyond our walls.

Is your best idea of a good time after a long day at the office to dive to a black box, sit still for 2½ hours, stare in one direction daring not to make a noise?

In the PAC world, we talk endlessly about bringing in new audiences. But how often, in that thinking, do we question the theater itself—how it is configured, where it is located, and why we assume everyone wants to come inside?

My personal observation, especially from running a venue where we had indoor and outdoor stages, fixed and flexible seating options:

The audience preference was always outdoor and flexible. Always.

So maybe, instead of constantly asking people to come to us, we should go out there. Tell our stories, yes. But also hear theirs. Artists who thrive in public space are your best friends in figuring this out.

Do you know who “the plug” is—or what it means to “hit the line”? Young people in your community might.

Across the U.S., dealers use social media and messaging apps to reach young people; in the UK, the related system of drug trafficking and child exploitation is known as County Lines.

CODE brings this hidden world into public view through exhilarating parkour, trials-bike stunts, physical theatre and live rap.

Created by Justice in Motion and directed by Anja Meinhardt, CODE meets young people where they are: in public squares, parking lots, shopping centers, recreation centers, schools—and maybe on your own campus or theatre terrace. The show only requires a footprint of 40 feet wide x 45 feet deep by 45 feet high.

Over 120 shows in the UK so far, time to bring this to the US.

To my colleagues-presenters: Unicycle Productions and JIM teams are planning to creating a US-based version, so you can tour this in a localized and affordable way to your community. We are looking for commissioning / development partners. A straight-up US tour is also possible with strong routing. Get in touch.

C**A is partnering with Street Arts Nexus on their OFF-WAA Street Arts Showcase to offer two showcase slots for C**A members with exceptional Street Performance acts as part of a must-see showcase at the 2026 Western Arts Alliance Conference. This high-profile showcase will transform the public spaces in and around BANDALOOP Studios into a vibrant outdoor performance venue. Selected artists will have the opportunity to perform for an audience of presenters, producers, agents, fellow artists, WAA conference delegates, and members of the local community during one of the performing arts industry's premier gatherings.

The OFF-WAA Street Arts Showcase is spearheaded by C**A members Sonia Kozlova Clark and Kevin Ewing in partnership with Bandaloop. Apply soon! First come, first served, subject to production. No "pay-to-play" or showcase fees, but all participating producers and artists must cover their own production and travel costs for the showcase.

Performances should:

✅ Be designed for presentation in public space.
✅ Be tour-ready, with a preferred running time of 10–20 minutes (30 minutes maximum).
✅ Be self-contained and capable of operating with minimal site infrastructure.
✅ Function safely and effectively alongside other performances that may be occurring simultaneously in nearby locations.
✅ Be capable of setup and strike within approximately 1–2 hours using the artist’s crew.
✅ Unless approved in advance, rely only on battery-powered equipment. Artists are responsible for supplying all performance-specific equipment, props, costumes, apparatus, instruments, and scenic elements.
