What is the relationship between environmental signage and architecture?
This question led the work of our Beijing studio for the Cloudscape of Haikou Library with MAD Architects. Overlooking Haikou Bay in China’s Hainan Province, the library appears carved from the natural world, with interspersed “gray space” creating light and openness. We developed a sleek and soft typographic language, and abandoned the use of standard arrow symbols, choosing, instead, to stretch the arrow to greater lengths in response to the building’s texture and curvature on light aluminum signage. Providing a design system that follows the architectural paradigm, rather than acting as a manual for the space. 2nd photo credit Arch-exist.
