French Musical Cat Automaton To Highlight Kensington Estate Sale

CLINTONDALE, N.Y. — Kensington Estate Auctions’ Monday, May 20, online auc- tion will be highlighted by a Nineteenth Century French musical cat automaton. With glass eyes and musically inclined, these cats move and sing after the manual crank has been turned. In addition, the online auction will include photography, Nineteenth- Twenty-First Century art (paintings and illustrations), bronze and stone sculptures, antiquarian books, stamped correspondence from the 1800s, wood carvings, Native Ameri- can, Chinese and Japanese ethnography, urban graffiti tagged art, animation cells, jewelry, vintage engineering instruments and much more.
International photography is highlighted by a unique collec- tion of images from Doug Menuez. In 1985, Steve Jobs granted Menuez unprecedent- ed access to document innova- tors of the digital revolution
and Silicon Valley. An array of original silver gelatin photos, proofs/contact sheets and books underscore this catego- ry. Other noteworthy photog- raphers include Gordon Smith (several), Phillip Porcella (“Dancer In Flight”), Matt Her- ron (“March From Selma To Montgomery,” 1965), Michael Grecco (Johnny Cash), Ken Heyman (Nigeria), Ozier Muhammed (“Sisters Nomad Camp”) and others. In addition are the Nineteenth Century British colonial albumens, albumens of the Pacific North- west and hand-colored Japa- nese albumens. Also represent- ed are signed images of the British royal family.

ver), two Emeralite banker’s desk lamps, hollow carved hissing canada goose decoy, Archimede Seguso “Opalino" murano fish, circa 1955, Moor- croft flambe Wisteria vase, 1920s Egyptian revival ink- well, baroque terracotta bas relief plaque of the Holy Fami- ly, Zacharia Njobo Shona carved stone sculpture, sulfide marble American eagle and others. Japanese objets d’art include Nineteenth Century Imari porcelain jars, Nine- teenth Century Meiji-era painted porcelain plates, antique embroidered beaded metallic dragon textile and Gofun Meiji period Hina emperor and empress dolls. In addition are Chinese objets d’art, Imari porcelain jars, famille rose porcelain flask and jar and a pair of giltwood temple foo dog carvings. Of special note is the pair of antique carved Indian Hindu temple goddesses.

With equal interest will be the 1934 woodblock by Paul Jacou- let, “Portrait Of A Chamorro Woman,” Charles Bunnel abstract composition, paint- ings by Alexander Gore, Jose Tella, “Rue de Furstemberg” (1960s), Muzaffar Abdullaev figurative painting, just to name a few. Published illustra- tions of interest are from Mario Cooper (1930) and Carl Lund- gren sci-fi cover art painting.
Interesting items fill the books, autograph and stamp category. Published in 2006 is the book Western Legends: Pho- tographs, Ink, Autographs and Memories signed by many notables such as President Jimmy Carter, Mickey Rooney, Eli Wallach, James Arness, Adam West and many others; Durer Albrecht: The Humilia- tion And Exaltation Of Our Redeemer, 1856; Charles Dick- ens, Master Humphrey’s Clock, 1850; and Nineteenth Century
Joseph Haydn, Johannes Brahms and Johann Bach orig- inal music facsimile manu- scripts. An inscribed photo- graph of Shirley Temple, My Fair Lady signed program with signatures from Julie Andrews and Rex Harrison; collection of signed books (nine) signatures from Salman Rushdie, Judy Collins, Joseph Anton, George McGovern, Sam Ervin Jr and others and a collection of stamped correspondence from the 1800s will cross the block.
Items of particular interest are a large antique Steiff mohair bear ride-a-long toy; Nineteenth-Twentieth Centu- ry patinated bronze bird equa- torial sundial; f lying winged Pegasus copper weathervane and an antique iron bank cashier-cage gate.

Memento Mori/Vanitas Tableau To Highlight Kensington Estate Sale
CLINTONDALE, N.Y. — Kensington Estate Auctions’ Monday, October 2, online auc- tion will offer many choices for the collector. Genres include paintings, sculptures, rugs, photography, ethnography, ani- mation art, philately, posters, sterling silver and porcelain.
There are those who believe human beings should live life fully because we cannot “take it with us.” Memento Mori/Vani- tas reminds us of our mortality combining elements of reality and allegory. Kensington Estate Auctions is offering an early 1900s assemblage Memento Mori/Vanitas tableau of a female head sculpture depicting life and death — a reminder of the brevity of human life.
The category of art includes Nineteenth through midcentu- ry paintings, Eighteenth Cen- tury etchings, French Limoges and German painted porcelain plaques, miniature paintings, original Disney and comic book illustrations, urban art and WPA paintings. Highlighting this category is a maritime painting by Thomas H. Willis; Gustave Adolph Wiegand Impressionist landscape; Henry Botkin’s urban painting; miniature paintings depicting Napoleon and Queen Louise of Prussia; and other notables.
In addition, the sale offers British farmyard oils, still life and interior genre paintings. Other artists include Hjalmar Amundsen, J. Edward Homer- ville Hague, Johnny Fried- laender; LA II (Angel Ortiz) and more.

Offered will be three rare French Art Nouveau posters. One is the poster from the French National de Opera, Le Martyre de Saint Sebastien, 1924, designs by Leon Bakst. The second is Theater de Monte Carlo, illustrated by Alphonse Mucha, 1922; and French Oper- etta poster for Panurge, illus- trated by Charles Leandre, 1913. An American poster of notoriety is of the Muhammad Ali vs Joe Frazier 1974 “fight of the century.”
In the photography category, there is an Edward Weston/ Cole Weston image of Ivanos and Bugatti, signed and stamped; photograph of the boxer Mike Tyson and a special collection of 1930s Harlem (New York) Renaissance enlarged photographs on a cus- tom board. The images are iconic views of street life in Harlem, as are the photogra- phers, such as Hansel Mieth, George Rinhart, Irving Brown- ing and others. Also available is the Lord John collection of original autographs of cultural figures and writers of the Twentieth Century, signed next to the cor- responding image. Notable images and signatures are from John Updike, Stephen King, Norman Mailer, Ray Bradbury and others. One very unique offering is a 1933 Theodore Van De Ver Velde S*x Efficiency, f licker-medical-book. With 480 cinematographic illustrations the reader f lips the pages cre- ating one’s own flip-book movie.
An Egyptian Revival carved and painted female Greco- Roman winged sphinx will be offered, as well as an antique continental gilt bronze lamp with a mounted sterling Ibex; French Art Deco bronze bird sculptures; Black Forest carved whip hook in the form of a rab- bit; antique Black Forest carved grouse game-bird shelf bracket; Edwardian equestrian
dinner wall gong; Art Deco fig- ural lamp with end-of-day splatter glass; Wavecrest f loral plaque; and Rodolfo Dordoni glass vase. The section con- cludes with an Ugo Zaccagnini ceramic art vase.
Jewelry, sterling silver and accessories from Kensington Estate Auctions is always in demand. Examples include a Tiffany Studio bronze tray (and other Tiffany items); Chinese enamel pendant mirror; butter- scotch amber bead necklace; Turkish Ottoman silver repousse wedding mirror; two Rockwell sterling silver Art Deco vases overlaid on black amethyst glass; Victorian silver christening set; silver repousse items; Gorham sterling silver mounted crystal footed com- pote; Art Deco E. Gubelin Lucerne blue guilloche enamel marble mantel clock; Fishel Nessler owl tassel brooch with dangling French Bull dogs; Claudio Rayes wrought iron side table and much more.
Included in the hand-woven
rug section is a Persian saddle- bag carpet; rugs of Turkish Ottoman lira currency and Turkish kilim Oushak. Two large Ind-Persian wool carpets are included and a Tibetan dragon rug.
Animation art focuses on Walt Disney, Warner Bros. and other noted comic illustrators. From the cartoonist Carl Barks, there is “In the Care of Ali Baba” for Walt Disney; production cell of Winnie The Pooh’s Most Grand Adventure and Warner Bros Daffy Ducks Quackbusters original drawing. The comic section does not end there. It also includes an original Joe Corroney illustration, “Spike vs. Dracula”; Jeff Schultz and Rich Koslowski original art of Veronica for Archie Publica- tions, including an original sur- realistic cartoon-character painting.
