REworking Parents, Rachael Ellison

REworking Parents, Rachael Ellison Engage professionals beyond the transition to parenthood. Coaching parents to take control of their career trajectory. Why REworking Parents?

Because parents don't have the support they need to make good choices around work and home. Because men and women are not publicly recognized equally for role as caregivers. Because only 14% of American parents get paid leave. Because despite recent shifts toward a more flexible work culture, colleagues often look down on parents who leave for pick up at the end of the day. Working parenthood needs to be REworked. That's what I'm up to.

is now offering 12 weeks of paid leave to employees as schools remain closed during the crisis.

Will other employers attempt to match — or even beat them?

Will parents feel like they can use the benefit if they do?

Bringing your "whole self" to work in the time of Coronavirus. I love this episode where we talk about authenticity at work--what does research tell us is the "right" amount of authenticity? Do we believe the data? Has that changed in this new reality? In this Coronavirus Era, we are all sharing more of our personal lives than ever before — whether on video calls with cats and kids passing by or sharing stories of feeling nervous or isolated. (Twice this week I used a zoom background to cover a half-naked 7yo dancing behind me.)
In this episode, we consider the when and how of workplace authenticity and why social intelligence can be so important for us all.

It's been a long time since I've posted, but I'm back--in podcast form! Episode one of the podcast Jennifer Owens Sonnenschein and I have been working on is live! REworking Parents, Rachael Ellison has always been about telling real stories, breaking the myths of working parenthood to inform and advise working parents. In each episode of this podcast (posted every Tuesday am), we talk about work-life data and share our thoughts and anecdotes about how those statistics play out in real life. We cover emotional labor, kids in schools, social life, cooking and so much more! (did you know Maytag did a study on dishwasher loading styles?). Give a listen, let us know what you think — and please share your work-life, breadwinning or "breadsharing" stories with us.

You can find us everywhere you find podcasts, on our site (www.thebreadwinnerspodcast.com) or on Messy.fm.

This article was an immediate share for several reasons. Mothers are running for office and they are not only making massive political changes on their way to office (see Liuba Grechen Shirley for Congress &. campaign funds for childcare), they are WINNING.

Also, more and more of us are recognizing: the system is broken and WE are the ones who will fix it.

Finally, the notion that parenthood limits our capacity for career growth an development may reflect how others see us (see Katherine Goldstein’s recent OPed in NYT for ex). Others may perceive us as limited, but their perception bears no resemblance to the resilience, creativity and strength we have within us to fight for ourselves and our children’s futures.

A black woman with an advanced degree is more likely to lose her baby than a white woman with a less than 8th grade education.

The answer to the disparity in death rates has everything to do with the lived experience of being a black woman in America.

We need PARENTAL LEAVE, not just maternity leave. Read this great account from a dad who took his. "As a business reporter, I've written scores of stories and profiles about business leaders and politicians, most of which have focused on men, because they still dominate executive ranks and boards of directors. I used to be fascinated by how they rose through their careers. I still am. But now, I'm equally interested in how much support they provide to the spouses, nannies and daycare workers around them, none of whom get the glory." h/t Rachel Sklar

Being a primary caregiver is the bedrock of our society, but the job’s value, and its complexity, is largely invisible to those who haven’t been immersed in it
