Last week was World Teen Mental Wellness Day, so we’re looking back at the virtual discussion around youth mental health hosted by Champions for Philanthropy and The Playbook Agents in January 2021.

In this clip Malcolm Lemmons, former professional athlete and contributing writer at Boardroom, talks about the stigma people of color perceive when talking about mental health.

Malcolm Lemmons was joined on the panel by retired NBA athlete and Duke Hall of Famer Shelden Williams (founder of The Shelden Williams Foundation) and Dr. Vaughn Gay, mental health practitioner and the founder of Holistic Atlanta.

The panel was moderated by Shanti Das, founder and executive director of Silence the Shame. Silence the Shame is a nonprofit organization that helps empower and educate communities about mental health.

As a Black-owned, woman-owned organization, Champions for Philanthropy is a Champion for Diversity every month of the year. We don’t need Black History Month to recognize the need for more Black people and people of color at the table. We started this organization 6 years ago because no one gave us a seat at the table, so we created our own. In celebration of our 6th year, we have decided to take a stand and make sure that the Sport Philanthropy industry continues to flourish and to make sure that others have a seat at the table or have the tools to build their own as well.

We are excited to announce the launch of our new initiative, Champions for Diversity! This initiative is aimed at increasing diversity in the Sport Philanthropy industry, promoting and supporting diversity and the number of people of color in the sport philanthropy industry.

We believe that diversity is crucial for the growth and success of any industry, and we are committed to creating a more diverse environment, helping to raise awareness about the importance of diversity and inclusion in the Sport Philanthropy industry, along with continuing to champion the great work already being done in Sport Philanthropy.

We are excited to share more with you about this exciting new initiative. Interested in getting involved?

This week we celebrated National Girls and Women in Sports Day. As women in sports, working with DeMarre Carroll and The Carroll Family Foundation to host three all-girls basketball clinics (two in person and one virtual) was an honor and a privilege. The icing on the cake was entertainment provided by twin DJ phenoms Amira and Kayla, our 3-time host, the amazing Sarah Kustok, and special guest speakers including Taylor Rooks, Kym Hampton and more!

As we celebrate the life of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., his work serves as an inspiration and beacon for so much of what we do at Champions for Philanthropy. His teachings and his messages - that no matter the person, we are all deserving of equality, love and justice, and that love will always conquer hate - are as important as ever. Thank you to our clients who work so hard to create a society that fits Dr. King’s vision.

Here’s some from Olympic gold-medalist Simone Biles, who knows what it takes to perform at her peak, and says fun is essential! Life can be challenging, and that’s okay. But don’t forget to take care of yourself and have some fun along the way. When we’re having fun, and when we’re healthy, we operate at our best.

As the giving season winds down, we want to highlight these wise words from Dr. Mary McLeod Bethune. One of the beautiful things about giving is not only how much it can help someone else, but also how personally rewarding it can be. As you give, you get. And remember, it doesn’t take gifts, a monetary donation or a day of volunteering to be of service. Small acts of kindness go a long way.

We’re excited that our client was featured in the ACC Network’s documentary “Twice as Nice - The Legend of Charlie Ward.” Earlier this month our co-founder Michelle traveled to Tallahassee, FL to watch the premiere at a watch party event hosted The Charlie & Tonja Ward Family Foundation. The watch event allowed members of the Tallahassee community to view the documentary and Q&A with Charlie.

It was great working with Charlie and his wife Tonja on coordinating the filming of the documentary. If you haven’t seen the finished product yet it’s a great piece chronicling the incredible journey of former Florida State University standout, Heisman Trophy winner, retired NBA player and philanthropist Charlie. Check out to watch!
