Facebook will now use all 2 trillion public posts in search

Facebook is making a big change to the way search works on its platform today: it’s now opening up search to all of its over 2 trillion posts.

When Facebook first introduced graph search in 2013, it was limited to searching through your friends’ posts, but now you can look through any public post ever made. In the company’s own words:

When you search, you’ll now see the most recent, relevant public posts along with posts from your friends. Search results are organized to help you cut through the noise and quickly understand what the world is saying about a topic in the moment.

Piracy Groups Want Google To Remove The Whole Site After Valid DMCA Filings

TorrentFreak reports Google is opposing calls from piracy groups such as MPAA and RIAA to remove the whole site from the search results over copyright infringements.

Google has a DMCA content removal procedure, where Google will take down search results linking to specific pages with copyright infringements. But the groups want Google to not just take down the specific page(s) in question but the whole site. Google says they don’t think that is a good idea.

Google said in their response, “Unfortunately, whole-site removal is ineffective and can easily result in censorship of lawful material.” “Whole-site removal would simply drive piracy to new domains, legitimate sites, and social networks,” Google added.

The letter Google sent in will be taken into consideration by Intellectual Property Czar Daniel Marti, reports TorrentFreak. The decision is expected to release the 2016–2019 Joint Strategic Plan on Intellectual Property Enforcement during the months to come.

Google also has an algorithm that targets piracy and sites with massive DMCA claims against them; we call it the Google Pirate Update.

Google Update Their Ranking Algorithms? Some Webmasters Believe So

Over the past week, I’ve been tracking the webmaster and SEO community and data around Google’s rankings. From what I see, it seems as if Google has made more than their typical daily ranking tweaks over the past week. Webmasters, SEOs and even the automated rank checking tools have all set off strong signals of a larger Google change, one that would be similar to when Google releases a new or updated ranking algorithm.

We know that Google Panda 4.2 is a slow update and what webmasters are seeing now, might be related to that slow rollout. But I personally believe the October 14th changes spotted in Google is related to the slow Panda rollout, whereas the ranking changes between the 20th and 21st of October are not necessarily Panda related.

We asked Google if they made any updates or changes to their ranking algorithms or search quality algorithms, but they have yet to respond to our request.

Sometimes Search Engine Land reports these changes even without a comment from Google because we feel there are enough webmasters and SEOs who are seeing evidence of such a change. To not report the change because Google has not given us confirmation would almost be unfair to the hundreds of webmasters asking why their rankings dropped or increased suddenly over the past week or so.

All the signals are pointing to a significant Google update over the past week. Here is what we think is going on.

There's No Such Thing as a Bug-Free App

A 120-ton space shuttle is waiting to be launched. There’s no human sitting in the control center, waiting to push the button that would launch the space shuttle. Instead, it’s the software that gives order to four identical machines onboard the space shuttle that pulls information from thousands of sensors and make hundreds of millisecond decisions.

This software is bug-free, doesn’t crash and doesn’t need to be rebooted, as reported by FastCompany. It even goes onto calling the software perfect -- as perfect as human beings have achieved. The last three versions of the 420,000-line program had just one error each.

If the software has bugs, people die. Period. The software was maintained by a group of 260 women and men working day in and day out to ensure the software delivers what it’s supposed to and ensure that no one dies.

How to Motivate Millennials in the Workplace

Millennials are the generation born between 1980 and 2000. Currently, they make up almost 33 percent of the US workforce so one in three employees is a millennial. While millennials are highly educated and technology capable, they are unfortunately the most frequent job hoppers. Studies show that this generation generally stays in one job around 2 years. Employers obviously don’t like the fact that these employees are not loyal to the company and hop on jobs so easily and frequently. Therefore, they constantly look for ways to keep these employees in the workplace. Below are some tips to motivate millennials and make them loyal employees.

Mentor them
Millennials want to develop their skills and therefore, they need some advice and feedback. Keep them on track with frequent feedback. Don’t mandate them what they should do. Explain to them why they should do it. Also, if they want to do a task in a way different than yours and produce the same results, let them do it. Don’t tell them that they should do everything in your way.

4 Things Non-Tech Leaders Do Better Than the Cyber-Obsessed

Let’s talk tech. More specifically, let’s talk non-tech in an increasingly tech world.

The building blocks of starting a business from the ground up go far beyond a series of 1s and 0s and require the strategic blueprint and marketing prowess of a non-tech co-founder. Technology is clearly important -- Sailo, the company I co-founded, is an online boat rental marketplace -- but without the right non-tech co-founder, a business cannot fully make waves in its industry (boat pun intended).

Related: Why Entrepreneurs Should Look Past Tech to Find Opportunity

Wildly successful technology companies like Airbnb or Pinterest, for example, wouldn’t be where they are today without the creative minds of their non-tech founders Brian Chesky (BFA in design) and Ben Silbermann (BA in political science). Here’s how to be an invaluable non-tech co-founder:

1. Speak your customers’ language.
While you may not be fluent in Python or Django, more often than not, your customer isn’t a technological rock star either and will only use your product or service if he or she actually understands it. Play a role in the customer perspective at every step by making sure the business and product use accessible language at each stage of building, designing, improving, selling and revising.

Co-founders lacking technology-heavy backgrounds tend be better at seeing the forest for the trees in today's online jungle.

Yahoo Says It Has Its Own Algorithm For Mobile Search Results

Yesterday, in Yahoo’s earnings call, in the question and answer portion, the CEO of Yahoo, Marissa Mayer said that Yahoo runs their own algorithm for their mobile search results.

The transcript has Marissa Mayer saying they have their own “algorithmic search on mobile.” The context was around showing “rich card experiences” and adding that experience into their mobile search results. Mayer added, “the organic results on mobile with our own technology that we think provides a richer, more action-oriented set of experiences on mobile.”

This was to introduce that they want to power their own ads to match their own search experience on mobile through the Gemini platform.

Yahoo has been powering their own knowledge graph for some time as well. That data may be licenses or crawled through algorithms they’ve built over the years.

Webmasters have continued to see Yahoo Slurp, the Yahoo search crawler/bot, continue to crawl through web sites. That frequency of the Yahoo crawl has slowed ever since Yahoo stopped powering their own search results. But Yahoo has never completely stopped crawling the web. Which often signaled that Yahoo was crawling the web to show something unique in their search results.

Yahoo & Google Together Again In New Search Deal

Reunited, and it feels so good. Well, we’ll see if that line from the classic song plays out for Yahoo, which has revealed it wants to be together with Google again in a deal for search results. The deal excludes Europe, almost certainly to avoid anti-trust issues there. It also will depend on US Department of Justice approval.

The Deal, In Summary
As part of today’s Yahoo earning news, it revealed a new search deal with Google:

In October, the Company reached an agreement with Google that provides Yahoo with additional flexibility to choose among suppliers of search results and ads. Google’s offerings complement the search services provided by Microsoft, which remains a strong partner, as well as Yahoo’s own search technologies and ad products.
Wondering how Yahoo and Google can be together, when Yahoo is supposed to be with Microsoft? What we mean by Yahoo and Google being together again? And what’s in the deal? Come along.

Three-year deal to put Google's results and ads into some of Yahoo's search results needs US Department of Justice approval and still might get vetoed by India or EU action.

Apple rolls out two new clean energy initiatives in China

Apple has announced two new clean energy programs designed to cut the carbon footprint of its manufacturing partners in China. The initiatives are estimated to save the environment from some 20 million metric tons of greenhouse gases between now and 2020.

The company is significantly expanding its clean-energy investments in China by building more than 200 megawatts of solar projects in the northern, eastern and southern grid regions, to start offsetting the energy consumed by Apple’s supply chain.

Apple also plans to move its manufacturing partners toward energy efficiency and clean energy. By partnering with suppliers in China, Apple plans to install more than 2 gigawatts of new clean energy for the future. It will share best practices for producing clean energy and building renewable energy projects, and assist suppliers with energy efficiency audits, regulatory guidance and building partnerships to bring in new clean energy projects.

LinkedIn jumps into freelancing in San Francisco, but is it too late?

LinkedIn has generally been a place for finding (or recruiting) for a full-time position. But according to a report from the San Francisco Chronicle, the company has now launched a pilot program designed to target job opportunity for freelancing (or, if you like trendy catchphrases, the “gig economy) called ProFinder.

Launched today, ProFinder will help freelance professionals who specialize in accounting, graphic design, and editorial. Of course, if it’s successful, it will be expanded to other industries and locations.

In practice, ProFinder allows employers to post jobs on the platform — separate from “Job Search” — and use LinkedIn’s vetting services like endorsements, skills, and recommendations to find the right person for that job.

Apple removes apps that collected users' private data

Apple has pulled several apps from its store, following security researchers' findings that hundreds of iOS apps have been accessing users' private data.

In a report published Sunday, researchers at security firm SourceDNA said they found 256 apps that were violating Apple's security guidelines by using software that was able to collect users' personal information, including their email and device identification numbers.

SourceDNA did not name the affected apps but said most were from developers in China. The source of the issue, according to the company, was a software development kit (SDK) from Youmi, a Chinese advertising company. Youmi's advertising SDK was accessing user data, including email addresses, device serial numbers and a list of downloaded apps, and uploading the data to its own server, according to Apple and SourceDNA.

SourceDNA's researchers said it seems the developers of the apps in question didn't know the SDK was being used to collect personal information from their users. Apple prohibits developers from using application program interfaces (APIs) that collect this type of private data, but researchers said Youmi appears to have begun slipping them into its software nearly two years ago, after its software made it through Apple's initial review process.

In a statement given to SourceDNA, Apple confirmed it had "identified a group of apps" using the SDK in question that violated the company's security guidelines. The company said it removed the apps and was "working closely" with affected developers to help them get their apps back in the store. Apple did not specify how many developers were affected or how many apps had been removed.
