Leadership transitions are often talked about as operational events. But in reality, they’re people events first.

In the latest episode of Carey & Co’s Non-Podcast, Podcast, Christy Fitzpatrick sits down with Abby Rosenswaike to discuss what really happens during the first 48 hours and final 60 days of a leadership transition — and why organizations that plan intentionally tend to stabilize faster.

The conversation explores:

- succession planning beyond the org chart

- managing uncertainty and staff trust

- knowledge transfer and “where are the keys?” moments

- the role HR plays in preventing avoidable chaos

- how new leaders can build connection early through culture and communication

One theme came through clearly: Leadership transitions don’t just test systems — they test relationships.

Tune in to hear practical insights for nonprofit leaders navigating change, growth, and continuity.

Leadership transitions are rarely as simple as replacing a role.

In the latest episode of Growth is a People Story, Christy Fitzpatrick and Kelly E. Grattan, PhD, MBA, CAP®, CFRE from Schultz & Williams, a Carey & Co company, discuss the realities organizations face during periods of transition — especially the uncertainty that exists in the “in-between.”

From longer hiring timelines and interim leadership support to communication challenges and organizational stability, the conversation explores how leadership vacancies can create ripple effects far beyond a single role.

One theme came through clearly: The longer organizations wait to address transition planning, the harder recovery can become.

Leadership Transitions

Big news for our team. 🎉

We’re excited to welcome Charlie Lippman as CFO at Carey & Co. 👏

Charlie brings the kind of leadership that strengthens how organizations run behind the scenes—where financial clarity and operational discipline make everything else possible.

At Carey & Co, that matters. Our work depends on building strong foundations for the organizations we support, and Charlie’s perspective will play a key role in continuing to do that well.

Just as important, he shares a clear commitment to mission-driven work—something that shows up both professionally and in the communities he supports.

We’re looking forward to what’s ahead. 🚀

Welcome to the team, Charlie. 🤝

There’s a moment after a grant is awarded that doesn’t get talked about enough:

Now what? 🙃

Our latest white paper breaks down what it really takes to manage government funding—compliance, reporting, systems, and audit readiness. The big takeaway?

Strong grant management is a team effort.

That’s exactly what we’re diving into next.

What does grants management actually mean?

In this conversation, Stacey Lea Flanagan and Christy Fitzpatrick get into what grant management actually looks like behind the scenes—from budgeting and staffing to documentation, audits, and proving outcomes.

A few moments that stood out:

• You don’t just have to do the work—you have to prove you did it (with documentation to back it up)

• Government grants shift the dynamic—you’re not a partner, you’re a vendor

• Budget changes aren’t simple… even small shifts can take time and approval

• And if you don’t plan for the time it takes to manage a grant, it ends up costing your team elsewhere

There’s also a strong reminder throughout: Be realistic about what your team can actually deliver. Because overselling outcomes—or underestimating the workload—can create bigger issues down the line.

▶️ Tune in for a practical look at what it really takes to manage grant funding well.

Clear outcomes don’t start in the grant narrative. They start well before it.

In this piece, Melissa Kozakiewicz of Tier One Solutions walks through something many organizations overlook—defining what success actually looks like before writing begins.

Because if outcomes aren’t measurable, they’re difficult to defend. And if they can’t be defended, they’re harder to fund.

It’s a practical reminder that strong grant writing isn’t just about telling a compelling story. It’s about building the systems to support it—data collection, consistency, and clarity around what progress really means.

Authored by Melissa Kozakiewicz of Tier One Solutions (February 23, 2026). Shared with permission.

Before writing a grant, define outcomes and build data systems to measure impact. Strong data makes results credible and funding more likely.

🎙️ Carey & Co’s non-podcast, podcast — New Episode

In our latest conversation, Christy Hamilton, COO of Carey & Co, sits down with Alexandra Bednarek, Senior Director of Digital at Schultz & Williams - a Carey & Co company, to talk all things digital marketing for nonprofits.

Alex brings more than a decade of experience in digital fundraising and membership growth, working with organizations like the Oakland Zoo, The Planetary Society, and Phoenix Zoo. In this episode, she shares practical insights on:

· Digital acquisition campaigns
· The evolving role of influencers in fundraising
· What’s actually working in organic social media right now

One theme that really stood out: integration and collaboration. Alex emphasizes how aligned teams—across marketing, fundraising, and leadership—create stronger campaigns and better outcomes for nonprofits.

There’s also a great laugh in the episode: fundraisers have influencers… accountants have The Accountant. Not exactly apples to apples—and admittedly a bit dicey considering the movie—but it makes the point that every role has its own version of influence. 😅👀
