So looking forward to slinging this (pictured) cherry cordial on Sunday and, obviously!, seeing you all.

While pondering the menu- warming & filling, bubbly & cool, boozy & sober- I had a vision of this coming Sunday afternoon's scene...

Familiar faces, a cozy space.
Lots of hugs and "glad to see yous".
Wafts of my new Ponche de La Noche Buena flx adaptation (sober/boozy).

Who's collecting local goodies for holiday giving?! What a luscious time- buried within our toxic shopping culture is the beauty of gift giving. I cherish choosing something beautiful for a loved one. I'm not an on-time, consistent year-to-year gift giver but I do love finding something that honors a special person.

If you're feeling it, join me this weekend at Hair•Color•Art
Sunday, Dec 7
upstairs from the ongoing

I'll be slinging a full Eve's Cidery tasting, bottles to go, drinks and a special cordial. The cordial is a result of other people giving me the thing I desire most- large amounts of fruit- and getting to play. (🙏 Full Plate Farm Collective, Stick and Stone Farm)
And yes, there's a super sober option, courtesy of herbs and lemon.

In a completely similar vein but with a different outcome, consider a donation to No More Tears / No Mas Lagrimas in honor of food access. I'll be helping them highlight their Winter fundraiser at a community party on 12/13 (free entry and food, cash bar, amazing community musicians.

Dearest folk,
Ode to winter coming on.
I LOVE this time.
I find such clarity in the rush that comes at the tail end of fall. Thursday night this week we'll tip right over into our single digit winter marathon and I will be ready, or not.

I ask myself, how did I celebrate the harvest this year? Did I appreciate this year's particular abundance and note it well?

The farm program at Enfield Elementary- slide 2- has regenerated this sort of framing around harvest for me. After years of being beat up and heartbroken by this or that failure at the end of the season, working with elementary kids has reawakened my sense of pure gratitude for the art of observing, recording and preserving the harvest in nature and in the cultivated space.
Thank you kiddos.

I do have a few things to offer in that spirit, if they serve....

3 birds left!
Big gratitude to these folks! My turkey crew of 15+ years, ever evolving.
♥️
On Samhain, the cross quarter, the day of tipping right over into dark season we processed the indomitable turkey. An incredible creature, whom I love raising in this strange swamp farm.
🦃
We processed birds while surrounded by children, basking in sunlight, welcoming new friends into our long relationship. As a group we look for that balance between death and feast-time. I'm SO grateful to fellow-travel with these folks and to offer the labor of love that is on-farm processing of meat.

Tonight, on such a lovely night, I feel the Samhain Cross-Quarter approaching. Some days are cold and harbinger-esque. Today was glorious, sunny and 65F. I tried to teach an old dog a new trick, but he preferred to nuzzle into all of the standing stalks of fading asters. He found this Bumble- maybe Black and Gold (Bombus auricomus). Maybe Common Eastern (B. impatiens). The Xerces Society Bumble Bee Watch is so excellent and hopefully will verify and/or correct me.

I thought Bumble was stiff and done. That moment was an ache for the sweet moments of this year. Times of sunsets, happy realizations, good connections. I got a little more myself and a tad more clear on a few things. Time with trees and bees, kids and their perceptive minds, insects and dinosaurs. Nostalgic and full of assumptions about life and death, I brought Bumble and their aster stalk in for identification and musing.

Bumble proceeded to wake and feed. I offered the last of my own garden flowers- harvested before our hard frost a over week ago. They got mobile, ate and were too busy for my staring and point-counting. Not dead.

Once they woke up, Bumble wasn't letting me count those abdominal segments. Maybe a female. Maybe. Was it cool to bring Bumble inside to the last of the flowers and an uncertain outcome in the morning?

When we- us Enfield Elementary kiddos- do observation, we focus on the sensory tools built into our bodies, and take care on how we describe and recall those experiences. We don't remove the beings we observe from where we find them. We work to separate observation from assumption and imagination. We work to build flexible language for our experiences and repeat them to see what's next. Routine observation practice is a huge part of pattern building and is the foundation for our nature-agriculture curriculum in the farm program. And when it got dark I, a solid adult, assumed Bumble was done anyway. I brought them in to play my identification game. Black and Gold? Ok to bring inside?

Love to the invertebrates, the kids who sat quietly with me outside, the wonderful dog who does what we both want and to the sweetness of this beautiful day at the tipping edge of things.
